I have a Yamaha 7.1 receiver and all speaker connections are maxed out including an indoor sub. The receiver also has provision for an addition two Paradigm outdoor speakers, and they too are connected.

I just got the Polk outdoor sub and I was wondering if I can tap off one of the outdoor paradigm lines? Or is it time for another amp? I sure do need an outdoor volume control as well.

Thank you

The outdoor sub has line level (RCA) or speaker level inputs or both? Line level would probably be better signal wise, but since you already have the wires for the other speakers run, you could tap into them to get signal for the sub. This will not affect the impedance of the line or the amount of power drawn as long as the sub is powered. If it has speaker level inputs, you might be able to run the wires to the sub and then from the sub to the speakers, though I would check to see what the sub's high pass crossover is first.

Thanks for the reply. Here is the reply I just received from Polk...

You will need another amplifier, either mono or 2 channel to drive the Sub10 if all connections on your pre existing receiver on used. Simply tapping off will not yield acceptable performance.

Does that seem correct to you?

Yes it makes sense because running it off the current amp will drop the impedance of that line most likely and put strain on your receiver. An external amp would seem to be the answer.

I was going to say something like the Dayton APA-150 which has a built in crossover for use with a sub, but they are sold out until June 11.

I can wait. June 11? Maybe. Can I get on a list or something? I just have to figure out where to put the amp as the receiver is indoors about 50-feet away from the outdoor speakers and the sub will be a bit further away. Does a run that long make that much difference?

Can you recommend a speaker volume control? Is there such a thing as an outdoor remote?

By the way, a friend of mine is selling Meridian G-68ADV, G-57, and G-55 (new). Do you know of anyone who might be interested? Recent purchases, medical situation. Nice stuff in boxes. I think he is doing an Audiogon auction but I am unfamiliar with all of that. Nice stuff for someone.

Thanks
