On the pre-amp side of things: What are your sources? Also would you consider an integrated amp?

for a $400 speaker/ea from Polk you shouldn't look to spend $800 in electronics. Just my humble opinion. Check Ac4l for denon 990

The 75's just may be his entry into speakers. A good Pre + Amp or integrated should last a few speaker upgrade cycles. I do agree that taking $800 + the $400 for the 75T's and spending $900 on speakers and $300 on something like and HK3490 would yield much better initial results SQ wise.

I've got four of the 75t , fronts and rears. I blew up my strdn 1010 because of the spks ha e two in puts each, so I guess I dropped the ohms in half. Thats why I'm also looking for A power transformer to repair that receiver. Now I have the sony str dn 1040 running them, but not too loud, I don't want to kill this one too. :-D

Just leave the binding post bridged and drive each one with a channel of amplification.

So we REALLY need to know your sources. Also are we to assume you need 4 channels of amplification?

If the Sony doesn't have pre-outs how are you using it as a source?

OK, to hell with Sony, I've been a die hard fan of Sony for twenty yrs. I've done some research. And I think I'm going to go with the Onkyo tx-nr818 its got the pre outs I want , more power, cleaner power. I wish it had Bluetooth buillt in but oh well. So what do you guys think?

I'm thinking we still want to know what you are feeding into the receiver as sources.

Hi, EKJ. When they ask about what "sources" are you using, they mean things like blu-ray players, TVs, cable boxes, turntables, media streamers, etc. That helps us know what types of connections you'll want.

The Onkyo 818 isn't really a source. It is, essentially, a pre-amp and amp all in one box (along with a radio tuner and other things). You can definitely hook up external amps to it and use it as solely a pre-amp if you want. However, the 818 has a good amp section and should be sufficient to drive your Polks.

Definitely dump the Sony since you were looking to get it repaired, you are FAR better off just getting something nicer.

Oh ok , well I've got an 46" lcd sony tv, and sony bluray dvd. Will replce them later. Mainly want the sound quality first. Oh and I also play a lot of cds and music from my phone.

Not a problem with the BD and TV, but their receivers aren't exactly sought after. Their TV panels are made by Samsung and their BD players are very good in their price categories, so I'd focus on the receiver and the Onkyo should do fine.

This year's Onkyo models offer a good amount of features and connections for the money. The one thing that I don't really like about them is Audyssey. I discuss why in my review of the Onkyo 626 (which is also a nice receiver and costs less, but no pre-outs). I'm a big fan of Pioneer's MCACC auto calibration system, and I think that the VSX-1123 is a good one to look into. It's $450 on Amazon (out of stock, but choose Amazon as the seller), and I saw it for $430 on Newegg a couple of months ago. So, you can get a good price on it if you're patient.
