I normally prefer listening to any 2 channel source using DB PLXII in music mode. The soundstage seems wider and I'm actually using those extra 4 speakers. straight 2 channel just seems thin (maybe I need a speaker upgrade? :D ). That being said, I wonder if anyone has a clue to how the PLXII alogorythm works. Some sources are quite evident in the surrounds and rears and others are almost non-existant. It doesn't appear to be frequency related at all. The disparity doesn't bother me but I wish I could understand why. Constant search for knowledge you know....Thanks, B

You can find high-level block diagrams of how it works on the Dolby site. In general all matrix decoders take out of phase information from the front channels and steer it to the surrounds while summing the front channels and sending that to the center. The exact details (to which I am not privy) vary slightly from decoder to decoder and between the various modes of a given decoder.

PLII Music is my favorite too and I use it for all sources pretty much all the time. You get the wider soundstage by setting the Center Width parameter to favor the front channels. You can move the soundstage forwards or backwards by changing the Dimension parameter and wrap the front to the surrounds by turning Panorama On.

Movie mode emphasises the center channel slightly and Game mode sends more to the surrounds (kind of like Panorama in Music mode). Music mode is the most flexible due to the adjustable parameters.

Thanks for the info. I still wonder why some souce material is quite evident in the surrounds and rears and the effect with some material is almost non existant. Hmmm...

Same to me. I always enjoy 2 channel sound on DPLII X.
Before the Neo: 6 was my best option ( i have a 7.1 system, though).

Cheers / Avliner.
