I have been wanting to upgrade my AV Receiver and have it narrowed down to 4 different ones, I currently am running the Pioneer Elite VSX-80TXV....The ones I am looking at all range from around $550 to $680

Denon AVR-2808CI A

Pioneer VSX-03TXH

Sony STR-DA2400ES

Onkyo TX-SR806

I have read countless reviews and ratings but still can’t decide. So here is what I would be hooking it up to...

Panny Plasma 58in 2007

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-Ray Player which has the new HD sound that’s the main reason for the upgrade.

Any suggestions? Best Sound? Best Upconversion?
Thanks
Bruce

Nolan,

Welcome!!! Well, what speakers do you have and what are your listening habits (i.e. how loud and music vs. movies). Also what is the size of the room where you listen and is it an open or sealed room?? All of these things will effect your needs...

I would immediately say stay away from the Sony. The New Onkyo is actually a downgrade from the previous generation 805....so I would inclined to tell you to look at the 805 as it is actually a much better unit. I have NO experience with the Pioneer so I cannot help you there....but given your price range you cannot go into the Elite line, so I would say once again probably not the best that you can get for the buck...

Which brings me to the 2808ci which I have suggested to several people here recently for the simple fact that you can get a $1,200 AVR for $598 right now (through 6ave. Electronics). For me this is truly the BEST bet for your budget range as you simply cannot get this level AVR and the price is a steal...

Now if you have some very power hungry speakers with low sensitivities, and need an AVR with a large power supply to give them juice then I would say go the route of the 805...just make sure you keep it in an open space as they run very hot. And you can get the 805's for about the same as or less then the 2808 right now...

So seriously consider the 2808ci as your top pick but if power is a need then the Onkyo 805 will be the way to go...

Thanks for all the info, here are the prices I can get each one for….

Denon AVR-2808CI Amazon $598.92

Pioneer VSX-03TXH eBay $669.00

Sony STR-DA2400ES Google Search $520-560

Onkyo TX-SR806 Amazon $620.24
My speakers are mid level and I mostly use my AV receiver for movies and XBOX I also use it for normal TV listening. The loudness is usually mid range due to I have 2 young daughters and don’t want to hurt their ears unless I am by myself I will turn it up louder. My room is an open room. Good video upcoversion is a plus because I still watch regular DVD’s and Regular TV but not that big of a deal.

There is a Yamaha that I liked to, what do you think about Yamaha?
Thanks
Bruce

Ok I have narrowed it down to 2 receivers, any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am new to this forum and it has been a great forum with great people so far. I am torn between these 2.....

Denon AVR-2808CI

Pioneer VSX-03TXH

Both can be had for between $600-$700

I just want to know which one is the best for...

7.1 HD Audio

Onkyo Speakers

Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-Ray Player which has the new HD decoders

XBOX 360

Dish Network VIP211 HD with HDMI out.

Thanks
Bruce

My Choice Denon AVR-2808CI

Both have about the same power 110 watts. The Denon only has two HDMI in and one out compared to the Pioneer Elite's VSX-03TXH three HDMI in and one out. You will need two HDMI one for DVd and one for Satellite TV. The XBox 360 will need component and both AVRs offer component to HDMI conversion.

The Denon will also support low impendance speakers, if you ever upgrade to 4 ohm speakers in the future. I had a Pioneer Elite as my previous AVR VSX-45TX and had some issues connecting to Def Tech speakers. Pioneer customer support was terrible, they told me they didn't support Def Tech which turned out to be incorrect when I was having a power-off at mid to high volume speaker output. I am still using the Pioneer Elite but it has had a failure in the component video switching and ended up buying an external switcher. I consider the Pioneer Elite failure premature (equipment is about 5 1/2 years old). I also had an older Pioneer Elite DVD player which I am no longer using. This was just my experience and others have had good luck with Pioneer equipment. Alos have a Denon DVD player.

So my vote is for the Denon AVR-2808CI in both of your duplicate threads.

I also like Onkyo, Yamaha and Marantz AVRs. You had mentioned previously Onkyo and Yamaha. I went back to Marantz; my first Marantz 1060 power amp is still kicking strong. To a certain degree you get what you pay for ;)

Good Luck!

I don't know how recently you bought the Panasonic Blu-ray player, but, if possible, I would return it and get the 35 instead of the 55. There is no difference between the two besides the 7.1 analog outputs on the 55 and you won't be needing them with whatever receiver you go with (assuming you will still be choosing between the two receivers you mentioned). I'm not sure how they decided 7.1 analog inputs were worth an extra $100 - my guess is that they are trying to get people to pay more through a little trickery. That is, 55 is a higher number than 35 so it must be better.

As far as which receiver to go with, personal preference counts for a lot when looking at mid to high end options. You will likely be happy with either as long as it has the inputs/outputs you require. It usually comes down to personal preferences on how it operates and only you know what you like, so you need to do your own homework. Going through the user manuals online is a good way to do this if you can't physically play with them in a store.

No I haven’t bought the Panasonic Blu-Ray player yet but I am getting the Panasonic DMP-BD55K over the Panasonic DMP-BD35K because I can get the BD55K for the same price.

Also I think after a lot more research I have it down to 2 receivers..the....

Denon AVR-2809CI

Pioneer VSX-03TXH

Which one do you guys suggest? I currently have a VSX-80TXH and love it but want to upgrade because of the new HD Audio decoding available.

I am somewhat a Pioneer fan because that’s what I have now but before that I had a Denon, cant remember the model #. I can get the Pioneer for $100 less…which one has the better overall performance for a basic home theater setup?
Thanks

You have asked the same question on two threads, which are almost identical. You will get better response if you stick to one thread. The main answer from the other thread was to get the Denon. Did you not like that answer?? The reason I ask is because you are reasking.

Good luck in your decision!

any denon is prime. seriously though pioneer is nice but denon has more fluid and spatial sound. All the big brands have power and features as common denominator but what separates denon from the pack is their distinctive clear transparent dynamic home theater processing ability.

When narrowing it down to the 2 choices you have listed, I say DITTO on the Denon. Just a better powered AVR than the Yammy as far as I am concerned.

Remember, in the end, it is you who must be happy. One man's dream, another man's nightmare. Unless one of your choices physically lacks something that the other choice does not.
Good Luck!:) Joe B.
