Hi everyone, this is a great and informative site. Great knowledge material. I have a problem that I cannot solve. I have a Onkyo Tx-SR601 reciever with Bose acoustimass surround speakers. O.k. I have five double cubed speakers with a sub that is attached with the wires that are coming out of the back. Anyway, here's the problem, when I am configuring my speakers I hear hissing noises in all speakers. I have component cables coming out of my DVD player going into the back of my Samsung 61" DLP. And I have a optical audio cable coming out of the DVD player going into the back of the reciever (Onkyo). Now, I pop in a movie, Van Helsing, I do not hear any surround sound but when I pop in Bourne Identity, I hear surround sound. :confused: Also, I have Dish Network 811 set top box and I have a DVI cable going out of the box directly into the back of the T.V and a optical audio going out of the box to the reciever. When I am watching analog channels, I also do not hear any surround sound, also, when I change the channel to HD channel, my reciever does not change to Dolby/EX, or something like that. Ultimetly, what I am trying to say, I do not hear surround sound even when watching T.V. I also need a suggestion on a OTA HD antenna, because I cannot watch any primetime programs that are broadcasted in HD. I subscribe to Dish Network's HD package and I only get 5 channels. It looks great in HD :)
Thanks for any feedback

Ok chances are that something is not setup right, I would double check the DVD Player Setup to make sure you are using Bitstream or PCM (which ever your reciever uses) and as for the hissing sound. If you have any other speakers I would try those on the receiver to see if the problem is still there.

If niether of these solve your problem I would exchange the unit for another one as there is something defective.

Changes

Thanks for replying to my message. I have tried both bitstream and PCM in my DVD player and it doesn't seem to help. How do I know what my receiver is using? Where in my reciever should I go to find this information? And for the hissing noise, this is just for the calibration. When I am at a specific speaker, let's just say front left, I will get a hissing noise when I am calibration the decible level. Higher the number, higher the sound. If there are any further ideas, I would surely appreciate it. Oh, how are aperion speakers? Any good? I need some suggestions. Thanks

Try this

Also if it is at all possible I would run your componentry straight to your receiver instead of running everything from your components to the TV and then from the TV to the receiver. You may be running the cables back and forth across some power cables which could be causing interference. The cables that Bose uses are thin and I would think they may be more prone to suffering from interference than a better shielded cable. You should still be able to run audio from your receiver to your TV if you want.

Also a couple of other statements;
1) Some (Most all actually) movies only broadcast sound to the surround speakers at certain times and the rest of the time they will produce no sound. The center channel is where the majority of sound comes from in a movie, dialog and other as well. If the channel (On your Dish receiver) you are watching is displaying DD then it should work through your receiver, but again on the same principal, only when effects are being directed to the surrounds.

2) You might want to go to a certain point in a movie where you know you should have surround effects and get right beside the surrounds and listen. Do not be afraid to play around with the surround fields on your receiver as well.

If you were already aware of all of this disregard but I wanted to state these things because they may really help you out. You really should not hear static or hissing if all is connected as it should be and if it is not receiving any interference from power sources. :eek:

Thinking on new speakers

How would you guys rate aperion speakers? Any good or Polk better. And would an Onkyo TX-SR 601 reciever push the speakers? Thanks
