I am looking to purchase a 70" Rear Projection television. I am undecided between the Toshiba 72MX195 or the Samsung HL-R7178W. What do you think? Any other recommendations? Thanks!!

Just curious. What were the major reasons for selecting these two units\technolgies?

Factors were: price on the Toshiba and PQ on the Samsung. I am now leaning towards the Mits WD-73727. Though pricier than both, I have read great reviews. What do you think?

I am not a big fan of rear projection because of the limiting viewing area, amount of room it consumes, and the extreme cost per inch of screen.

I do not know what your room limitations are but a front projector would give you a larger and better image for 1\3 to 1\2 the price!

I would also suggest that you sit down with your family and watch a movie using DLP technology. You may find that someone in your family is sensitive to the rainbow effect and get headaches, fatique, and even motion sickness.
Not a good thing after spending US$5000+.

I was going to buy a DLP system and my wife and I went to our local boutique store and watched a movie on one. It took us about 20-30minutes to realize that we were not candidates for this technology.

If you have never considered front projection, the cost savings may be worth it to you.

I can't comment on the other two, but I have seen the Mits, and all I can say is WOW. I love it. It was too big for my space, but I don't think you could go wrong with that choice. I went with the 52" and love it. The picture quality on these are very impressive.

Rear Projection

Don't necessarily agree with the comments regarding rear projection TVs. The viewing area is limited on certain models, many newer models provide very sharp and bright off-axis viewing, which was typically the case on older RP models.

Size is a factor with RPTVs, however this has been offset as of late with quality of picture and price difference as opposed to some of the plasma, DLP and projector offerings. Plasmas have incredible color saturation, but fall short when it comes to blacker than black recreation. DLPs are also getting better, but still don't seem to be able to rival the sharpness and imaging a good portion of the RPTVs. Projectors can rival and surpass some of the RPTV offerings in picture quality and offer a small form factor, but these options most certainly come with a price.

Prior to purchasing my Hitachi, I found Toshiba, Mits and Pioneer Elite also had some excellent RP offerings. From my research, the RPs seem to allow for some of the sharpest, vivid viewing for a relatively low cost standpoint. A properly calibrated RPTV is almost impossible to beat at a relatively inexpensive price. To find a projector that rivaled some of these images were anywhere between $1000-3,000 more.

If size isn't a factor and budget can be (well, for most of us anyway... :D), RPs are an excellent value. If size is a factor and cost is less of an object than getting the best picture available, projectors have come quite a long way in the past few years and likely would give you the best possible picture overall, but again, this comes with a mighty hefty price. Good luck with your decision, have fun with it!
