Please help with a receiver selection

Well first off I was searching the net for a receiver to fit my needs and I stumbled across this great site, full of information and helpful people!

The total cost that I'm looking to spend on the speakers, sub, and receiver is in the range of $3000 +/- a few.

I have not purchased any speakers as of yet but the room that they will go in is approx. 13x13. It is an open area, already pre-wired for four wall mountable speakers and also a center speaker.

The room is 90% HT / 10% music.

Here are the speakers that I was looking into that would need a suitable receiver (if you have recommendations on different speakers, please let me know):

Polk Rti6 x 4 - L/R and Surround
Polk Csi 5 - Center
Svs pb 12 plus - Sub

5.1 for now since the budget is a bit restricted but can be expanded.

So my question is what receiver for these speakers? I like the Dennon and Yamaha line. Needs to be expandable to 7.1 in the future. I was looking into the Yamaha RX-V1800, it has 130w / channel (130x7) is that too much power for these speakers?

Sorry there's quite a bit of info and questions in this post but if I'm missing anything just ask! Thanks for the responses in advance!

Welcome to the forums snafu37! Nice selection of speakers and a sub you have picked out. As far as the receiver you pick out anything in the 100 watt range will be plenty. So go for the one with the features you like. Both Denon and Yamaha are very nicely built pieces. And you can't ever have too much clean wattage, so don't worry about that.

There really isnt an issue with having too much power for your speakers. Normally you want to find an AVR that has all the features you want/need and that is the least expensive. Tell us what the AVR has to have and we can give you some options.

Wow, thank you for the quick responses! Ok, first off, I like the idea of video upscaling and multiple hdmi inputs that they offer. I haven't looked too in depth at the denon, but I'd like to find one in about the same class as the rx-v1800. Also the system will need to be upgradable in the future to 7.1. Does that help any?

HT Options

The SVS sub and Yamaha is also a good options. However, I'd sugest spending more on speakers and limiting the receiver and sub each to the $6-800 price range.

Check out the $6-800/pair main speakers like the RBH and Ascend included in the recent AH shoutout. If you bild your system around these for better audio quality than the polks.

I have looked at the Yamaha RX-V1800, and listened to it in stereo mode and it is quite nice (runs fairly hot if not ventilated properly). I have also had the Chance to view and listen to the Onkyo TX-SR805 in a theater demo room and was pretty much taken aback by the performance. I already had high expectations from me, and it met them with ease in terms of power (it also runs fairly hot, needs lots of room to breath). I just finished reading a lengthy review on the Onkyo and it seems to be a pretty good all around surround receiver. Some notes are that the Onkyo is significantly larger than the Yamaha RX-V1800 (they are similarly priced, I believe at this time the Onkyo can be had for less online than the Yamaha) and will require more space to breath and may not fit in some audio racks or standard size enclosures. I would go Circuit City if you can just to look at it and see if will even fit an a desired location. The same can go for the Yamaha, but less B&M stores have it in their stores so seeing it or hearing it in person may not be as likely. All these receivers offer some variation of video upscaling, let us know if you have anymore questions.:)
