Please explain the member descriptors

"looking for a job"... "troll idiot"... "should be listened to"... "field marshal"...

Where do these descriptors come from?
Criteria?
Hierarchy?

Thanks,

Hi, herbu.

The title in bold just below your name is a function of how many posts you have. The green/red symbols below that, along with the description underneath (in your case, "is a forum member in good standing") is a function of how many reputation points you have. If you have positive reputation, your symbol(s) will be green, and they'll be red if you have negative reputation. The more positive or negative points you have, the more symbols you have up to a maximum of 11 symbols.

Thanks, Adam.
How is one's reputation decided to be positive or negative? I'm beginning to develop my own opinions and get a feel for who is naughty and who is nice. ;) But I also see what seems to be helpful information from someone who can be abrasive at times, and I might tend to assign them a mixture of red and green bars.

The descriptor under the green/red bars, (like "Adam should be listened to"), in some cases seems to be a little more informal than the bold "Audioholic Jedi" tag... For example, "Is looking for a job" or "A forum troll that begs attention". Living on the sarcastic side of the tracks most of the time, I kinda like these tags. Wondering if they are also automatically assigned based on the number of green/red bars.

Not criticizing or proposing any change, just curious.

Thanks,

As far as I know, the descriptions based on reputation are all automatically assigned. The negative ones have changed over the years since I've been here, but I haven't noticed a change in the positive rep descriptions. The admins have control over those, as well as the post-count-based titles, which have also changed over the years.

Reputation is given out by other forum members. Every "thanks" is worth three points, for example. The symbol at the bottom of a post that looks like a six-pointed star, next to the "Thanks" button, is used to give out or take away reputation points. The more points and posts someone has, the more reputation points that person gives out/takes away. There is a limit to how many times you can dole out reputation in any 24-hour period, though.

As you've alluded to, the descriptors aren't a great indication of someone's helpfulness. Should I be listened to? Hmmm, maybe sometimes. :D But, I tend to keep my mouth shut (well, fingers off of the keyboard) on topics that I don't know about. Years ago, it took a long time to increase or decrease rep, so it tended to better reflect someone's standing in the forum. Nowadays, one person can swing someone else between red and green with one click of that star button, so it can just as easily indicate if you've pleased or upset someone with a lot of points (or if someone is just messing with you :)).

Those icons used to give a description when you hovered over them, but they don't seem to anymore. They are supposed to indicate the status of a thread, and this thread might lend you some insight.

Basically, if you're helpful, courteous, and offer good advice you'll have green dots (chiclets). If you're a jerk, snarky and rude, you have red dots.

If you want the most green dots, you should try to be funny and clever, as that is valued online more than being actually helpful.

Also, if memory serves me, they did not have this system at all when I joined, and so the posting done back then does not count toward one's reputation (either positive or negative).
