Make sure you have the PS3 settings set for optical audio if you are using digital audio like you say. The next step asks you to pick the audio formats...only choose the ones you know the receiver can play. Make sure the receiver is set to the proper setting for receiving audio from the optical. That should work. If not, make sure your speakers are properly connected.

The PS3 can automatically detect what audio settings your receiver can handle, so set that to automatic. Then make sure your receiver's optical input is assigned to the input you are using for the PS3, also, make sure you took off the protective tips on your digital optical cable, many people don't notice those are even there.

PS3 cannot auto detect via optical, only HDMI. Optical is a one way street.

An alternative to using the optical output on the PS3 would be to use the digital output on the TV. The TV will receive the HDMI input (which has audio with it) and will send it out of the TV's digital audio output.

I've seen an instance of that happening before where the digital optical output from the tv was only outputting stereo, not 5.1, so that may or may not be the best solution.
