So I don't know too much about this and i'm sure you guys do, but im sure you heard the ps3 doesn't work right on tvs that only have 1080i and not 1080p resolution, my question is, is there something i can buy to get HD on my 1080i tv with the ps3? or do i just have to buy a new tv?

Without knowing the actual model/type of TV you have it is not correct to make that statement. There is a lot of FUD going around that is just confusing people.

If you have a 720p/1080i CAPABLE TV then you will have great success with your PS3. I run my PS3 to my 480i/480p/720p/1080i capable TV without issue via component video. Works fantastic!

depends on the TV.
some of the TV's display the 1080p signal from the PS3 at 480p because they can't downscale and re upscale it correctly (I may be WAY off on this but it's what Sony said).

there will likely be a Firmware patch that will allow you to choose the native resolution of the TV.

no purchase needed. I would check the TV to see how it handles 1080p signals, do you own the PS3?

if you can just "buy a new TV" feel free to send me your 1080i TV.

i dont know anything about anything, all i know is that my tv at my parents house that supported 1080p resolution worked fine, my tv at school is 480p/720p/1080i capable and it doesn't work. im using an hdmi cable, can you get high res through component cables? the tv i have at school is a kolin 37in lcd, i think they only make one model, yes i realize this tv is a piece of crap, i will not make this mistake again in the future when buying a tv.

yeah, you can get HD through Componant.

anyone who doesn't shell out for an HDMI Receiver generally uses Componant.

The likely reason that it isn't working is that your TV expects a 1080i or less coming in that HDMI (uncompressed) socket.
the componant may have different results, hopefully your TV will downscale then reupscale the signal to 1080i, if not you should at least get 480p out of it.

I would say check your PS3 settings and make sure you have the resolution set on Auto or change it to display all the resolutions except 1080p. Games like Resistance only output 720p (or SD) and not 1080i. In this case, the PS3 will automatically display the game in 480 if your TV does not accept 720 or vise versa.

Set it to 720p and you should be fine even via component. There is NO "auto" setting, period. HDMI checks once when you first connect it and will tell you what the display is capable of and it will then use the highest available that the TV will accept. Component does cannot check, so using component you have to set it manually.

The PS3 works fine with any TV that accepts 720p. If you have an older HDTV that only supports 480p and 1080i, you are stuck with 480p for the time being.

The PS3 HDMI port only supports TV that have HDCP-enabled HDMI ports. If you want 720p on an HDTV that has an HDMI port but does not support HDCP, you must use the component cables. Component cables work fine with 720p.

My set only has DVI, so I am using an HDMI->DVI cable but fortunately for me, DVI supports HDCP :) It works great.

NOTE: All HDMI is required by HDMI licensing to support HDCP on all products. Sometimes this may not be properly implemented, but all HDMI equipped devices must have HDCP or they should not be using the HDMI logo on their products.

DVI may support HDCP, or it may not. Many DVI equipped pieces of gear, for example, computer monitors, are not HDCP compliant. I have a projector that has DVI, accepts HD signals through it, but is not HDCP compliant.

ON SUBJECT: I have a 32" Olevia I just bought and hooked up via HDMI. It accepts 1080i/720p via HDMI and it works perfectly with my PS3 over HDMI. I also hooked up my PS3 via component video to my projector and my plasma TV and that also works perfectly fine at 720p and 1080i.

If you are having serious issues that you can't resolve, I think that there is a tech support line available for helping you with your PS3/display connection. But, the issue is not with the PS3 unless your display ONLY accepts 1080i/480p and doesn't accept 720p. This is only common with older CRT displays.

You may have missed some settings in the set-up menu of the PS3: Go to the "settings" menu and click on "display." Then check the boxes for 480I, 480P, 720P, and 1080I. These menu selections must be done with a component cable connection, or the PS3 won't accept your selections and your picture will be lousy. The component cables are hard to find, or at least they were a few weeks ago in my area. Best Buy, Walmart and Radio Shack didn't have any. I had to go with a $70.00 Monster PS3-specific cable kit at Circuit City, but at least it included an optical audio cable.

My Samsung 32" CRT is a 1080i monitor; I plug the PS3 into it on occasion, but the overscan kinda annoys me on games.

It works fine other than that. (I used component BTW on the TV).

Ditto, my PS3 works great over HDMI set in 720 and 1080i.

While I did respond to your PM on this, I've gotta say that I've heard that Iron Man isn't the best transfer overall.

If you are connected via HDMI, you should get the best image with the PS3 set to output what your plasma is designed for. My guess is that 720p is likely best and because it's a Sanyo display, you possibly aren't going to get proper deinterlacing of 1080i video. So, I would set the PS3 to only output 720p, and not 1080i as this won't benefit you at all unless you actually have a NATIVE 1080i display (not likely).

My guess (pure guess) is that the Sanyo is just not up to the level necessary for best video presentation, and does better with the punched up colors and graphics of a video game than the smooth, and often far more demanding, requirements which video presents. Likewise, if it's a few years old, it may be falling a bit behind on video processing capabilities.

I personally switched from a rough around the edges Sampo plasma TV to a Pioneer 60" plasma so I could get the most I could out of the display and from BD/HD in general. I saw a remarkable improvement in overall quality on titles I already owned.

But, if you haven't tried top tier movies, such as Cars, then you may not really know what your display is capable of with Blu-ray yet. Hard to say if it is the movie encode, or if it is the display.
