Plasma Sales Increase but LCD Marketshare Surpasses

DisplaySearch today released Q4 2005 shipments and revenues for plasma TVs by brand, region, size and resolution. Worldwide plasma TV shipments rose 109% since 2004 to a record 2.7M units. Shipments exceeded expectations by 11% as plasma display suppliers stretched their capacity to meet demand in seasonally strong Q4. Despite stretching their capacity and exceeding expectations, plasma TVs actually LOST MARKET SHARE relative to Q3 2005 compared to 40-44" LCD TVs which enjoyed over 300% growth in 2005. This seems to fall in line with our predictions that plasma, while still popular is steadily being overrun by advancements and price drops in LCD technology.

Next thing you will tell us is that a year or two from now SED sales will be taking market share from plasma and LCD.

It's just unheard of! Imagine, a new/better technology ruining older/weaker technologies!

:D

Seriously, interesting numbers, but about what would be expeceted I think. More plasmas more LCDs and more distribution throughout the world.

Now where's my HD disc player?!?

The report says that LCD market share increased in the 40"-44" segment, but doesn't say what actual market share is for LCD's and Plasma's in that range... making it impossible to know which has the greater market share.
