Honestly, if you aren't buying for a year, than I'd just wait a few months and see what happens.

plasma are still the best

Plasmas are still the best for the Video-holic!

Problems is that plasma are far more maintanance and care. They are often twice the weight, have glass panels, and need break-ins. OLED is likely to RULE the HD landscape, but not for another 4-5 years.

In the interm, this article may help explain the differences:

This is excellent advice. TVs keep improving, so the type that might suit you now may not be the type that will suit you a year from now. Too many people acquire an opinion and then don't update it as the products change, which is a mistake. Basically, anything anyone says now may not be true a year from now; you will have to research the matter then to see what things can do then.

On that note, Mr. LCD lover, the XBR9s are CCFL, but the XBR8s are LED backlit, and over 5" thick, AFAIK. Sony may or may not be putting their eggs to quickly into OLED.

1" thick 600 hz plasmas are around the corner, most likely.

Stuff I think I've picked up. I don't really care. I like front projection for sure.

Things are always changing. One day, LCD will be worth the money in terms of PQ, outside of very high ambient light situations.

I doubt plasma is going anywhere...But you cant really be too sure of anything in this market..

I can see Panasonic's new line of plasmas dominating the tv market within the next 6months...They are lighter/thinner, and more efficent..I would imagine they are built more sturdy too. Either way, OLED has a long ways..

I've been in the market for a flat-screen HDTV for over a year - not sure 'why' I'm still waiting (except my 32" CRT is just 5 yrs old!) - looking at the 42-46" models (about the largest size for my den space), and a year ago, I was in favor of a plasma set, but the LCDs have shown some dramatic improvement & the prices have dropped - like the lighter weight of the LCDs, and the viewing will be pretty much straight-on in a moderately lit room.

Last night I was reviewing the latest issue of Consumer Reports (agruably not the best judges of electronic equipment but just an opinion) - they rated both types of technology in all size ranges; for those that interested me, the Panasonics were surprisingly high on their list (don't have the issue w/ me to quote model numbers, sorry).

But, looking forward to some more ideas in this thread (BTW, the OLEDs do sound amazing!) - :)

LCD is better just check out the Epson 6500 Front projector. I don't see a plasma getting that big of a screen. And not at a reasonable price.:p

Go LCD and get an LCD projector;)

Keep in mind that a projector install is going to be a bigger project and probally cost more than if were to get a 50/60in plasma.

Oh so true sir.

A solid 1080p 3LCD projo is going to run at least $2200 or so. A good screen at least $400-$500. Mounting bracket, long cables, and new shades to darken the room, at least $150-$300.

Those 2 tvs are pretty far apart in terms of price..

If your considering the 800u, take a look at the 850u..its around 1700 on amazon right now..higher-end model, more caliberation options for that amazing PQ we are all after.

All this talk of plasma manufacturing ceasing does little to curtail the enjoyment of products previously purchased .

*do I get points for alliteration?*

What I'm trying to say is find a display you like, and then buy it. Don't focus on the technology that is creating a pleasing experience, focus on the experience itself.

Ahh! but the off axis issues my friend. What good is a 55" set if only one person gets to enjoy what it offfers? Most are good only to about 10 or 15 degrees off axis...

...at best.
