Pioneer VSX-D557 no sound

Hi there!

I have a Pioneer VSX-D557 receiver. It has been working flawlessly for several years but has just developed a problem.

My brother-in-law was watching TV and he picked up the remote to change the volume level. As he was picking up the remove, and before he touched any buttons, the sound quit working on all of my speakers. I believe that picking up the remote at the time the sound quit working is simply a coincidence.

Now, I believe that the center channel speaker had quit working a few weeks prior but I had not done any troubleshooting on this as I thought a speaker wire may have come loose from it's connection in the rear of the unit. I didn't want to pull my entertainment system apart during the holidays and it appeared as if the other 4 speakers (no sub woofer) were working fine and the output from the center speaker wasn't really missed. Now that I look at the back of the unit, no wires are loose but I have not checked the speaker itself to see if it is working. I assume that it is but that is an assumption and we all know about assuming things :).

I tried switching the inputs, using the front panel buttons, from the DVD player, the VHS Tape player and the Cable box. No difference, no sound. I connected the cable box up to the television directly and this works fine using the speakers located inside the television cabinet. The video output from the receiver is working and switches when I change the input device using the front panel buttons. Regardless of the input device the sound does not work.

I have the owners manual somewhere but I cannot find it. I don't believe that there is a reset switch/button on the unit as I can't find one. I am (actually my wife is) looking for the manual but I as I recall it is a set up and operations manual with little or no troubleshooting section.

I really, really like this unit and would love to get it working again. I have a minimal amount of skill with a screw driver, pliers and soldering iron. Does anyone have any ideas, experience, tips, tricks, incantations or just some "shade tree" advice as to what might be wrong and a possible fix?

Thank you for your time and any help is greatly appreciated.

It is possible that the whole unit just died, but it is also possible that a button was pushed ever so slightly to mute it?

Perhaps in the manual it spells out how to reset the unit?
Try the mute button. I doubt the speaker wire would just fall out on its own:)
May need to do some more troubleshooting though.
