Well I have the Pioneer Elite vsx-84txsi hooked up to my Toshiba hd-dvd player using an hdmi cable to my InFocus play big in72 pj. My Pioneer 84 will not pass any thing other then 480p to my pj even if I put the 84 to pass hdmi threw. If I install my hd-dvd directly to my pj I can run up to 1080. I also have the same problem using my HD cable box. Is Pioneer aware of the multiple problems with the hdmi ? Is any software fixes available for it?

That is not encouraging, I am considering the vsx-82 or 84 mainly for the video up conversion. Can any other owners who may have already resolved this or have some info chime in?

Projector resolution

Cobrage,
Your infocus projector is 480P native resolution, so in your situation you will get the best performance sending the PJ 480P. There is likely little or no advantage to an upscalling DVD player or HD-DVD with your current display.

More encouraging, if your video cannot handle anything above 480p then that's all you will get. Are there any known issues with the video upconversion? Does it work as well as advertised? Having 1 HDMI input to the tv would sure be better then the 4 connections I have now.

I should have also stated that I have a 52’’ rear lcd projector tv that will run the native 720 and 1080 and have the same results with that on the pioneer 84. even if I did not have a display that will handle the full 720 or better that dose not remedy the hdmi problems with the pioneer 84 unit it self

Video up conversion will work if using components in and out and s-video in and out or s-video in components out. The problem with the unit is the multiple hdmi to hdmi connectivity. Even have noticed different threads regarding the same problem connecting the pioneer elite dvd player to the 84 using the hdmi to hdmi. For some reason the 84 will not pass more then 480 using hdmi to hdmi. All thou some tv, pj, and dvd players will work fine utilizing the hdmi to hdmi the majority will not.

Cobrage, have you adjusted the settings (pg 66,67) HDMI - Amp and Resolution - ??.

Jes14, the 84 does up-convert all analog video to HDMI. It does not up-scale the resolution. 480i/p -> 720p/1080i

Understood, thanks avrat. But Pioneer does advertise up-converting the resolution do they not?

I believe that up conversion will only work if the 84 out puts to your video source using the component out only. Also I went home today and turned on my 84 to find out that my component out put jacks #3 is no longer working I know have to send my unit out for repair to some electronic place that is one hour away from me. And that pioneer support line is very poor. I was going to buy a Denon at first but was talked into the pioneer from tweeter what a mistake.

Yikes, thanks for the report cobrage401. Maybe I should stick with Denon.

I stand corrected, the 84 does do up-scaling using a Faroudja scaler which should do a good job.

I picked up the 82 last night:cool: , more of a "sidesway" move then an upgrade audio wise. But it is nice having just the one cable running from the component stand to the tv(HDMI). Also nice having one cable from HD-DVD to rec. again HDMI. I had TEN running from the Denon, when you count 6 channel analogue, three for component and one for didgi coax. So, the A/V area is much neater (WAF)
The Toshiba HD-A1 has been spectacular and erratic. I can get no signal from the sub in HD-DVD test tone, but it shows up in some movies and not others. In End of Days I have bass in the soundtrack, but none in the action??? No boom for explosions. Yet in Batman the bass is tight and deep!
The video is well....:D especially Batman!! WOW, Blackest black I have ever scene. The most visually stunning movie I have ever had in my HT. I tried Star Wars Ep. III the opening scenes as well and it was a noticable improvement over the Denon 2900.
I have the S.A. 8300HD plug in with component to the VSX-82 so I'm not sure of the HDMI problems I have heard of. I can't say I notice any difference in the picture, but I can see some jitter in the guide.
More later. Turkey time up here.

Good luck with your new 84!!! Hope you enjoy it.

I sent my 84 back to tweeter and they gave me a new one. The new one is passing hdmi to hdmi with no problem. Just confirms to me judging from other post on hdmi problems with this unit and my problems that some units just aren’t working right.

My hd-a1 works fine the only problem I run into is adjusting the hdmi out put resolution from 480 to 720,1080. Some times it will change and some times not.
