Pioneer VSX-521 - No Tuner Sound

Question:
Hope someone can help me on this one. Can't seem to figure it out.
I have Pioneer VSX-521, which I bought about 2 1/2 years ago. Soon after buying this unit, I had to move out of the country and was put in storage for 2 years. I'm now back in the states and trying to get this unit up and going again.

I'm having trouble getting the tuner to work.
Everything else is working fine, TV, DVD, but the FM/AM stations are not working.
  • I have my cable box and my DVD on HDMI.
  • Speakers are 5.1 Energy Classic
  • Antennas are up and plugged in
  • I'm getting ST Tune on the display, so I know I'm getting a signal
Any ideas would help...
I'm hoping this is a setting somewhere, as this is no longer on warranty.
And its basically brand new since I had to put it in storage when I bought it.

I have been through your manual. I see it loses the station presets after being unplugged for a period of time. But you should be able to tune manually.

Even though it shows a signal, I wonder if the signal is strong enough. What aerial are your using?
The only fixable situation is if the stations are not coming in strongly enough to overcome the muting that prevents a loud hiss blowing your speakers.

There is no setting that would stop the radio playing.

If you do have adequate signal then the radio is not working.

Service will not likely be worth it.

Your best bet is to buy an outboard stand alone tuner and connect it to a line input.

Do you get ANY sound? Static or anything? Or is it almost "like it is muted"?

If it seems like you have NO SOUND, then the likely solution:

Search your remote control for a button called "signal select" and try to push that button a few times (you will see the display on the AVR cycle through the options auto, digi, analog, or something similar). This is a VERY common problem on the Pio AVRs, you hit that button by mistake and lose all sound on that input bc you told the AVR to look for a signal that is not there. I have never tried this on the TUNER input though, so I'm not certain if that setting can be changed on that input.

No sound.. nothing. Not even static. If I turn up the volume to max there is not even a hum.
I know I'm getting a signal.

I've tried to cycle through the "signal select" no ability to change it.

I have a feeling this is "dead" feature of the amp from the factory production.. which is unfortunate. It's brand new, but was in storage for a couple of years, so its no longer under warranty.

I guess I can live without it, but its just a bummer..

So I guess this never worked.

There are lots of good tuners to be had on eBay. Even most of the cheaper ones will be better then the tuner in your Pioneer.

If you spend a bit more you can get one that has HD radio. With all the rf hash in modern homes, analog FM has become unusable. The worst is from LED bulbs. I have gone all LED and analog FM is a problem, unless I severely limit the number on, and not use the ones under my FM roof antenna. HD radio now sounds better than analog. I see your Pio did not offer Ibiquity HD radio. I have to move my car a long way from the house before I can hear FM, the hash drives out the sound near the house!

Initially I was down on HD hard, but the codec has improved drastically and now is a super AAC plus codec. It now sounds better than analog, and I use now by default.

Yeah, it probably never worked, I just never knew it. Soon after I bought it, I had to move out of the country and it went into storage.
I don't think its much of a big deal. I mostly listen to radio over the internet anyways.
But, it was a frustrating problem that I thought I could find a solution.

I guess the solution is simple... ignore it.
