i can not get any output from the surround sound outputs on the back. is there a fuse that could have blown ?

Perhaps try This

Try going through the menu thoroughly and make sure that you have all channels switched on that you want on. On the Pioneer, it is mostly a manual operation. I had the 812 and the speaker set up that I needed in the menu showed something like fl-fc-fr-rs-ls-sw or something weird like that. There are many configurations that it offers and you have to choose the right one according to how your speaker set up is.
