Pioneer VSX-1016 TXV problem

Recently I've noticed an issue with my 4-5 year old Pioneer VSX-1016 TXV. When I'm watching movies the sound cuts out for about half a second three or four times during a movie and Dial Norm +4 (instead of THX) shows up on the reciever display for a second or two. I thought it might have been my DVD player, but the same thing happened once yesterday while watching football. I have both the player and TV hooked up via optical cable on separate inputs. I checked the manual, but didn't find anything helpful. Haven't tried customer service yet, but I will if nobody has any suggestions. Any advice would be appreciated, and yes I have thought that it would give me an excuse to buy a new pre/pro for HT :) Just don't want to spend the $ right now.

On my Pioneers, it will display the dialnorm value when the input stream changes. I get this on TV when I either change the channel or when the signal drops out and is reaquired. I haven't noticed it on a movie. Perhaps someone here has an idea of why your DVD audio stream would be temporarily interrupted. Before getting into that diagnosis, though, have you noticed this on more than one disc? It could be the source material, too.

I have noticed the issue on more than one disc. I've been extremely busy and haven't had much time to play around, but I'm going to try swapping out players and going back to the original DVD's. I usually play backup copies to keep my originals in pristine condition. I'm sure it's possible that it is my backup program causing the problem. That would be annoying, but if I have to go back to using my original discs, so be it. Still less expensive than getting a new pre/pro.
