i have a pioneer sx-750 and as long as i have had it the sound on either side would cut out or start to static. my dad thought this was because of a short. however i finally got the nerve to open it up and when i did i was astonished by the amount of dust so i brushed away all of the dust i could get to and it seems like it plays clear on the left and right now. does it play better because of the dusting or is it just coincidence??

fleaflicker, welcome to the forum!

It's certainly possible that the dust was causing it. If dust is in the volume knob (which is just a variable resistor), then you can certainly hear static while adjusting the volume.

Of course, it's also possible that in the process of disassembling, dusting, and reassembling the unit, you just happen to fix (by accident) whatever it is that was wrong.

Hmmm, I guess I didn't actually answer your question, now did I? I guess we need someone else to chime in.

Dust and grim gets into the Pots of the variable resistors and causes static when those particles are excited. It is very propable that the dust was the cause of the problem (and your dad was kind of right, it is a short because of the dust, just not a dangerous one:)).

thanks for the help guys. i am pretty sure the problem was that the dust was shorting something out because i have put it back together and now it is crystal clear with no static.
