Pioneer Receiver taken out by lightning, Budget Receiver shopping

Had a lightning strike come through coax into DVR and out HDMI to the Pioneer. Looks like time to get a new receiver. Budget is $500 with a little wiggle room. Currently looking at Pioneer Elite LX502 from Fry’s for $478 it Yamaha TSR7810 from Costco for $450. Any recommendations for which is the better receiver or perhaps another option? Thanks for the input.

My vote is for the Yamaha TSR 7810, Not saying the Pioneer wouldn’t do the job just that the Yamaha has pre-amp outs and the latest surround formats.

Hi TechHDS, thanks for the input. Looking through the spec sheets I do not see any surround formats on the Yamaha that are not on the Pioneer. I do like the Yamaha's pre-out's though, I never used the ones on my Pioneer so do not know if I will ever use the ones on the Yamaha.

Speakerman39, Thank you also for the input. What is the advantage of the Denon over the other two?

Thanks,
Daren

The Denon will have the Audyssey XT 32 W/ Sub EQ HT which allows for EQing (2) subs independently. The Yammie will have the YPAO w/RSC and the Pioneer MCACC. Neither the Yammie and/or the Pioneer will EQ your sub(s). I also have had better results with Audyssey over time. It just sounds better to me w/Audyssey. Highly recommend!

Cheers,

Phil

How does the Denon compare to the Onkyo TX-NR777? It's available from Amazon today for $399... Sounds like a steal but you know what they say about if it sounds too good to be true...

Phil is right about the Denon unit being able to dial in two subs with XT 32 if you have two subs. Also IMO I’d take the Denon over the Onkyo. But if your interested in Onkyo, Amazon has the RZ 810 for 499.00 3 year warranty 130 x 2 @ 8 Ohms. Just posting options for you. Marantz units also really good units.

Don't have any experience with Denon or Onkyo. I believe Onkyo owns Pioneer now (though I could be wrong) and Marantz is made by the same company as Denon. Any of those would be good. I suspect though that my wife would not be happy if I pushed the price for the Denon after shipping. At that point I may be better off going through the egg as they offer it for $599 new with $100 newegg gift card thrown in and free shipping. There are many options here and since this happened all at once she really wants something sooner than later making local pickup the preferred method. I still may have to have her wait a few extra days for delivery...

Oh no, the DVR was smoked also... DVR is a DirecTV receiver... It gets replaced by DirecTV...

Actually had two DirecTV receivers, my Pioneer receiver, Cable Modem, WiFi router, two Garage Door openers, my Rain Bird sprinkler controller (top of the line of course :( ) and perhaps an old 36" TV all taken out by lightning. One strike on the Garage taking out the openers and the Rain Bird, one on the DTV dish, smoking everything else, and one on a tree in the back yard, destroying one very big branch but so far everything else looks good. Hopefully the tree does not die from the strike... One lightning storm, three strikes on my 1 acre property.

Why couldn't it have taken out the big TV so I could upgrade that?

Invest in whole house surge protection, plus a UPS for the fragile expensive stuff.

Unfortunately would not have helped with most of this, maybe for the garage, even then I question it. First hit came in through cabling from the DirecTV dish, did not go over power lines, just coax to DirecTV receivers to the receiver, likely arced over to the cable input as well as they travel together through the wall into the house killing the cable modem and router. Other items were in the garage which is not connected to the house and was a result of a direct strike on the garage. I have everything on UPS but nothing is guaranteed when we are talking about lightning.

I do plan to purchase a whole house surge suppression and battery backup (with Generator, I plan to be way up north in Wisconsin) when we move next... Until then, since I suspect it will be in next 12 months, I will just have to roll the dice again. I am getting some grounding corrected as it was installed wrong by the DTV people and hopefully will get some cash back on the receiver due to that.
