Hi,
i use HD zone on my pioneer vsx924k to watch the picture from my cable box in another room. picture works fine but audio is from tv only. I have ceiling speakers in the 2nd room connected as surround back on the receiver and have a zone 2 speaker setup also on the receiver. is it possible to get the audio from the cable box in the 2nd room out of the ceiling speakers instead of the tv?
thanks in advance.

Go into the Amp assign of the receiver and set it to 5.2 & HDZONE to get audio to the speakers in the other room. There may be some limitations regarding source audio output.

Hi,

thanks for the reply, appreciated.

not able to test this until tomorrow but im thinking your suggestion would result in the audio having to be played in both rooms. so with hd zone i get the picture in the other room, with this 5.1 id then have the corresponding audio but say someone was watching netflix in the main room on the tv speakers they’d have the ceiling speakers playing a different audio. Is that right?

Maybe I misunderstood the speaker layout in each room. Can you clarify what is going on in each room? Is Zone 2 the second room?

Hi,

Apologies, my description isn’t very thorough.

Set up as follows:

Living Room - ‘Main’
- Samsung screen into Out 1 control on receiver
- 4 x Kef Ci ceiling speakers using front & surround speaker outputs on receiver. (no centre)
- 1 x B&W 610sub (connected to sub 1 on receiver)
- No optical.

Dining Room -‘Zone 2’
Samsung screen into Out 2 control on receiver
- 2 x Kef Ci ceiling speakers using surround back/hdzone speaker outputs on receiver.
- 1 x AV link sub (connected to sub 2 on receiver)
- No optical.

Receiver
- speaker system = zone 2
- speaker setting = sw-yes, front-small, center-no, surr-small, x-over-80hz

thanks.

Ok, so a Samsung TV in the Main room with four ceiling speakers and another Samsung TV in the dining room with two ceiling speakers, yes? There could be some issues to work out.

Are you using ARC in the Main room TV? It needs to be off because HDMI Control needs to be OFF for what you are attempting to do and ARC will not work with HDMI Control OFF. You will need to connect an optical cable from the Main TV to the Pioneer for Smart app audio to be played from the Pioneer if you were using ARC.

How is the Cable Box connected to the Pioneer? If connected with an HDMI cable, you will also need to connect analog cables from the Cable Box to the SAT/CBL analog input on the Pioneer.

Once those connections are made, press the MULTI ZONE button on the front of the unit. Press it until it says Z2&HDZONE ON. This should send audio and video to Zone 2. Turn the Input Selector knob to SAT/CBL. Then, press and hold Zone 2 button on the remote control until the light flashes and then you can adjust the volume in Zone 2.

If it works but audio is output in the Main Zone, press the MAIN button on the remote control and turn the volume all the way down or press mute. Now, this brings up another issue. There will be no Sub signal in Zone 2 if both are connected to the Sub Pre Outs. If your Zone 2 AV Link Sub has R&L analog inputs, connect an analog cable from the Pioneer’s Zone 2 Pre Out to the Sub analog inputs and adjust the Gain and Crossover knobs on the Sub to the desired level. If none of this works, my apologies, I’m flying blind.;)

ah ok and therein lies the problem. when i refurbished 8years ago i put the amp upstairs in the ‘electronics room’ and ran the hdmi cables to each tv in the walls without the means to easily feed additional cables through. silly i know and lesson learnt. I’d need to lift the carpet and floorboards which the wife wont let me do any time soon for a bit of ‘noise’ :) i suspect there is no other way with the current set-up. This may be a very ignorant question so do forgive but with ARC on the 2nd tv shouldnt it just route the audio for the dining room via the amp to the zone 2 speakers? I appreciate arc is temperamental at best.

thankfully doing another round of works next year and looking to get the setup designed properly. Fancy a gig? :)

Ok, there is still hope. What is the model of each TV? Are you using ARC with the Main Zone TV, now? Oh, and to answer the question, HDMI and digital signals from coaxial/optical cannot be converted and sent to Zone 2. It is an unfortunate limitation when setups such as your own limit running analog cables.

Just checking in, thought I'd throw out another option before you start lifting carpet and getting yourself into trouble.;) One way to get picture and audio to the Dining Room without having to run new cables is to change the connections just a bit. So, set HDMI OUT to OUT 1+2. Video will be output to both TVs. Then, rewire the speakers from the Dining Room. Move them from the SURROUND BACK/HDZONE speaker terminals to the FRONT HEIGHT/WIDE B terminals. Go into the speaker configuration and set it to 7.2 channel surround system & Speaker B connection. Set the SURROUND BACK/HDZONE speakers to none if you can do so. This will turn off the SURROUND BACK/HDZONE amps when not using Speaker B. So, with these settings, no more Zone 2 or HDZONE settings applied. This new configuration will get you a Main Zone with two monitors, HDMI Out 1-Living room and HDMI OUT 2-Dining room, and A-Living Room and B-Dining Room Speakers. So, lets say somebody wants to watch something using a Smart app on the TV in the Living Room. They can do so and use the TV speakers. At the same time, somebody can go into the Dining Room and watch something from the cable box that is connected to the Pioneer. Setting the speaker output to B on the Pioneer will turn off the speakers in the Living room as well as both Subs and just the two speakers in the Dining Room will be on.

I'm assuming both TVs and the Pioneer are connected to the network. If not, get them all connected asap. Also, some cable providers have an app within Samsung's Smart TV App Store and can be downloaded and used in place of a cable box. With the Pioneer connected to the network, you can download the iControlAV5 app for iOS and Android devices to control the Pioneer from the app. It also supports web setup so adjustments to the system can be made from a PC or tablet.

Like any system, there are limitations. With the newly proposed setup, one could do the reverse and have the speakers on in the Living Room but because there is a Sub in the Dining room, somebody using the smart apps and TV speakers in the Dining room would also have to physically turn off the AV Link Sub as it would be playing the signal from the Living Room. Your setup makes a good argument for the need for Zone 2/B Speaker assignable Subwoofer Pre Outs. Also, this setup limits video output from the Pioneer to the same source for both TV's. The use of ARC is only available from the HDMI OUT 1 port of the Pioneer so it can only be used with a TV connected to that port. Viewing different sources with different zone speakers for each room would require the rewiring for the Zone 2 & HDZONE setup.

Sorry, noticed TV models and one is HD while the other is 4K. So, video output of the Pioneer will be limited to the highest resolution of the lesser model(Dining Room 1080p) when connecting both of them to the Pioneer. If you have a 4K capable device connected to the Pioneer and want a 4K signal sent to the Living Room, switch off HDMI 2 so a 4K signal can be sent out of HDMI 1 to the Living Room TV.
