Pioneer PD-M6 - Repair Question

My father-in-law has a very nice Pioneer PD-M6. It was one of the first consumer multi-cd players (6 disc magazine format).

Problem: The player will only play disc 1. Any attempt to change to another disk and the disc mechanism responsible for moving up and down through the disc's floors itself on the bottom (i.e. disc 6).

I've verified that all of the motors are functioning properly, having opened the unit and watched each perform its function. The only thing I can figure out is that the board controlling the position of the moving mechanism is dead and can no longer determine its position relative to the disc it has been asked to play (i.e. disc 1, 2, 3, etc.) I've also reseated the ribbon cable connecting the mechanism to the primary board.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what else I should look for? I know a newer model (PDM-426) can be had for $150, but if I can fix this for free or less than $20 then it would be worth it to my father-in-law.

Thanks,
-K

For what it's worth, I had an old Onkyo six disc DVD player with a similar issue. When I brought it to a repair shop, they told me it would cost more to fix than to just purchase a new one. So I bought a Denon player. I haven't bought a multi-disc player since....

Thanks Cozmo, I figured as much and had my father-in-law place his order for the new unit. He likes being able to put in 6 cd's and let them play all day with his whole house sound system.
