So a good friend of mine just have me his Pioneer Elite receiver and I know NOTHING about it. I am a definite newb when it comes to the audio/visual game so I figured I would ask around. I know this receiver is 5 years old or so but is it any good? It was missing the remote, is it worth it to buy a new one or should I sell this and try to upgrade to a newer model. Just trying to figure out if it's worth keeping it or not! If you have any opinions let me hear em!!

Thanks all

You sure that's not a VSX-55TXi?

It's a nice receiver to be sure, it's one of the few models I know of that has i.link (a firewire connection) which is similar to HDMI but not compatible with HDMI devices.

What kind of TV and source components do you have? Do you have any speakers?

Indeed it is a VSX--55TXi. I currently have a Sony - KDL-46XBR9 - 46" LCD TV. I have a Sony surround system now but it's basically garbage.

agreed ... I had a 45TX ... and loved it -upgrade to 2 new "HD amps" (Yammie 3800 and Pio SC-07) and only found them to be on par with the 45TX (just with additional features)

so sold them ...

and bought a 59TXi 2nd hand - for half the cost of either of the new amps :)

Any suggestions on speakers?

Yeah, go and listen to speakers you can logically justify paying money for, and buy the ones that sound good to you.;)
sounds like terrific advice to me, just have to make sure and not take the wife along so she doesn't know how much I spent

The remote

The remote, if it's the same one that came with my 56TXi is a huge best of a remote. Fully backlit with a 2 line lcd display that costs around $165 to replace(last time I checked). However, I've found that the remotes from the newer Pioneer receivers can handle most of the controls and are much cheaper to replaces since they are minimally backlit and have no lcd display. Unfortunately, those receivers do have a lot of functions and the oem remote does make it a lot easier to use. If you got the receiver for free, then that at least makes it a bit easier to decide. I'll agree with everyone else though, I replaced my 56TXi with the VSX-23TXh and I know I gave up a lot in the power department.

Wow ... free is good. That's a beast of a receiver. I have a 45TX that I'm running in my 2.1 system. I'm quite pleased with it. In your case, it might be worth it to spring for a new remote as you'll need it to access the on-screen setup from your favorite listening chair.

It looks like you need remote AXD7325. It's the same remote that came with my 45TX. It has the LCD readout, etc. Or, you might just look for a used receiver that has the remote with it. I paid $150 for my minty 45TX this past fall on Craigslist. Manual, remote and setup microphone was included - plus, the receiver looked like new.

Enjoy!
