If you don't care about video switching using the VSX-33, then you are absolute gold without any sort of splitter at all. If you do want to be able to switch video using the VSX-33 (but not for dual-football games, of course), then let us know.

Without video switching on the VSX-33
  • Directv receiver #1 HDMI output to TV #1
  • Directv receiver #2 HDMI output to TV #2
  • Directv receiver #1 digital audio output (either optical or coax) to VSX-33
  • Directv receiver #2 digital audio output (either optical or coax) to VSX-33
You might need to assign the digital audio inputs to sources on the VSX-33 (let me know if you need help with that), and you might need to set up the Directv receivers to output audio over the digital audio output instead of the HDMI output. If you let me know the model number of your Directv receivers, I can look that up in the manual (the link that you provided lists more than one model number for the HD receiver).

I'm a bit surprised that those receivers don't have a coax output for connection to a TV (the kind that you use to use, but you'd set your TV to channel 3 or 4). Oh, well. Technology moves on. :)

I can't see any mention in the manual that you need to turn those audio outputs on, so I think that you should be good right from the start. Of course, if you don't get any audio, let us know. :)

It does allow you to set if you want to output Dolby Digital audio or not, and I don't know the default. If the receiver shows Dolby Digital, then there's nothing to change. If it shows stereo, then you'll want to go into the audio menu on the Directv receivers and change that setting.

ahh crap. The outputs are digital audio but, they are coax not optical. I have optical cables.

Looks like i'm off to get coax cables. I will update once I have them.

EDIT: Not bad. These cables are pretty cheap. I'm off to radioshack.

If you're still around and haven't gone shopping, you can use any cable with RCA connectors on the ends for those. You don't need special "digital" coax cables.

What's the good word? Were you able to get it hooked up and working the way you want?

WORKING!

It still won't "split" one receiver to the tv as well as the receiver through HDMI. I'm like "how can I do this!, do I need an active splitter?"

then I sat back and realized. Put each receiver on the same dang channel. LMAO!

Next step: XBOX360 and PS3 routed to each tv. I will need the receiver for this. I'll be back.

XBOX360 routed through receiver. Problem was one of the hdmi ports on my wall was not giving a good enough signal. Changed the input and now we are good to go!

I only have 2 of the 4 outputs on my wall right now. I have put another dual gang on the wall for each tv and then I will have 4 for each and will be good to go.

Not sure if you got this working completely or not.

Using "Video/Audio Splitter - HDMI M to HDMI F X 2" (the monoprice link you posted - grr I cant post links yet) Were you able to get picture and sound on both tvs through hdmi?

Yes sir. It will not work with the passive splitter from monoprice though.

The VSX-33 has two hdmi outputs you must use (one for tv1 and one for tv 2).

There is also a setting in the receiver you must set from AUTO to HDMI under HDMI Audio Settings. (If i remember correctly).

Do both of your tvs have to be on at the same time for it to work? Or can you have one on, and one off?

Breakdown:

You cannot input two different video/audio signals and have them display/play sound simultaneously.

Directv Receivers: HDMI to TV directly (One to each respectively) and Digital Audio COAX to the receiver.

XBOX: HDMI to Input 1 on Receiver and you can HDMI from output 1 and 2 to the tv's. That works.

I've never tried it with only 1 tv on...as they are right next to each other.
