hello...first attempt ever to setup a home theater system, primary drivers being music and movies. our music setup will include playing cds, internet streaming and streaming mp3 from a NAS drive. at a point where i have to decide on receivers and speakers. initial build will be a 3.1 and will later scale it to a 5.1 in the living room and 2 speakers in the study.

for receivers, im trying to decide between pioneer and yamaha. as a novice, i have focused on HDMI inputs/outputs, HDMI upconversion as key points to look for. currently trying to decide between Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH and Yamaha RX-V1065 (i originally considered a Yamaha RX-V863, now discontinued but available online).

hope someone can point me in the right direction. thanks.

hi...also looking for advice here. have narrowed down to klipsch heresy III vs B+W 684 or 685. this is my first time ever in setting up something like this. this will be a long term investment.

The 23 would be more comparable @ a retail price to the 1065.

IMO the pioneer gets the nod. Check out the above review.
You will not have any issues driving either speakers with the pioneer, especially the klispch :)

I have the 21txh and actually just got everything fully installed over the weekend. I must say, it's been a verryyy easy experience. There's a bit of a learning curve with the receiver, but it's really not as bad as I thought it would be.

I'm using it with a 5.0 system at the moment. I'm not a pro or anything, but I think it sounds awesome. I'm using it to drive speakers that have a much lower sensititivity rating than your klipsch so you'll be fine.

The receiver seemed to have all functionality I was looking for, a good bit of power, pre-outs, lots of hdmi connects.. I definitely recommend it.

That is a really good deal, esp for Best Buy. I was able to get my 21 for $500 from 6 avenue.

Have you checked out the TX-SR707 from Onkyo?

I am currently testing the 21txh and 707 at home and I would definitely recommend you check out the 707 if you are looking at the 21/23txh.

Can't go wrong either way, just wanted to put in my .02 man good luck

First post here.

Just got back from BestBuy, where I purchased my first ever receiver, the 21txh. They had it "on sale" for 599, but I asked them if they would price match, saying I saw it online for 470ish (BS). He consulted with his manager and presented a 499.99 offer to me. I took! It is very reassuring to know that I have 30 days to return it knowing about the few quirks it has. Notably the sometimes inability for the remote to power the unit on after it has been off for a while and a few over at AVS mentioned some handshake issues with DirectTv boxes.

Anyway, just nail them with some price match bologna and hopefully (dependent on the manager) you will get a big reduction like I did :)
