Pioneer elite sc-72 4k upscaling

I just purchased a pioneer elite sc-72 receiver. When I switch on the 4k upscaling option for 1080p cable broadcasts the picture quality gets worse. Anybody have any ideas why? My TV is a Samsung 4k unhu8750. I tried disabling most of the TV filter options to try to have the receiver improve the picture.

Maybe your tv has better upscaling....I never have found using the video processors in my avrs as a benefit, my tv is more capable (a Samsung plasma). The inclusion of video processors in avrs IMO was more about upscaling things like composite or s-video sources.

Sure its 1080p and not 1080i?
Also, im not 100% on upscaling. Imo, taking something in 2k and trying to double the resolution causes more problems than its worth.

Good point on 1080i cable or OTA broadcast tv generally....altho I think some ppv content is 1080p.

My provider "advertises" hd in 1080p but majority is 1080i. I also find it odd that 720p is almost nonexistent.

Yeah, I have Xfinity and they probably do broadcast in mostly 1080i. I just know when I run the HDMI directly through the TV, the picture is much better. Oh well. I'm still fine tuning the mcacc calibration, but the sound is already pretty amazing.

Id pass everything native to the display. Very few AVRs have great video processing.

I have it set to upscale to 4k from the video parameters menu.

I'd turn off the upscale on the avr. Not 100% on your tv, but I'd guess it's also trying to 'upscale' the video as well. I have an lg and from what I gather, it decides if it should scale or not.

It's actually 4x as many pixels. Also, due to the fact 1080p divides evenly into 4k, even a simple scaler should do a good job. A really good scaler can actually make 1080p look better when upscaled than native, since it completely removes the screen door effect/visible pixel transitions and provides a very smooth, sharp picture.

Not sure which model your referring to, but im not aware of any avr that matches the abilities of top tier displays.

Back when external scalers were common place for front projectors in the late 90s early 2000s, people were really concerned about the display. With the sources now available, not so much is need as the quality is better.

I cant imagine that a 1k avr does a better job than a 3k display.

Is your avr or display ISF?

Edit: note that even the cheapeast external units of good quality start around $499 and go out to a few thousand.
