I have a pioneer elite receiver model VSX-31. Had since 2002 and everything worked fine until today. Receiver controls TV, DVD player, multi-disk changer. All pioneer elite except TV. I do not have cable or satelite. I plugged in a DVD, sat down to watch, great picture, no sound. Thought maybe the receiver didn't switch to DVD mode but it was ok. Turned receiver to TV mode and sound came out of 2 speakers. This is a 3 speaker system. CD's play ok in CD mode. Was fine yesterday, what could have happened?

I have no experience in receivers or surround type systems. The place where I bought all of my equipment closed 2 years ago due to the economy. I don't know what type of repairman to call for help. The receiver has pro-logic on it and multiple speaker configurations, none of which have been switched in 8 years.
Thanks for any and all help on my problem.

When I put in VSX-31 I get a new current receiver, not one from 2002. I don't see an archived receiver with that model number. Are you sure it is correct, and you have the date of purchase right?

Things have changed drastically in receivers since 2002, so I do need to have the manual.

Eight years is probably nearing the lifetime limit of a receiver.

However check all speaker connections, especially the center.

Check the speaker set up menu. You did not say anything about a sub, so I assume there isn't one. So speaker set up is right and left yes, center yes, surrounds no and sub no.

If that fails then unplug receiver for an extended period and return the receiver to its default settings. Then go through the input set up again. If that does not solve it, then you likely have a fault in the receiver. At the age of the receiver repair is not cost effective and it should be recycled.

Be aware that a lot of faults are due to inadequate or no power protection. The grid is under great stress these days and there is more violent weather. So simple surge protectors no longer are adequate, certainly not round here, and I suspect most if not all of the US. Newer receivers and devices are even more likely to be destroyed, by power peaks, surges and under voltage than older devices.
