Pioneer Elite PRO-940HD Plasma TV Review

What was really nice was the display Pioneer had up which showed each successive generation of plasma technology throughout the years. Looking at first and second-generation plasmas and comparing them to today’s models was simply staggering. Blacks were gray, resolutions were not what they are now and overall the format has since then matured considerably. Taking a look at today’s latest-generation panels, you wonder how far the format can go and if it can get much better. I’ll summarize the review with this: “It’s all about the blacks!”

Seriously - I've been saying for years that the Pioneer Elite plasmas are basically untouchable for overall quality. It's good to see another review that agrees with that concept. On the other hand, I went into BB this evening and saw a sub $5K 60" plasma... and it looked pretty good.

I'm just not sure how Pioneer will manage with so much quality coming from the competition as such low prices. Even if they remain a step ahead.

Why did you have to go and review the Pioneer Elite HDTV? I have wanted one of these for a while now because it would go well with my Pioneer Elite VSX-74TXVI receiver. Ahh, throwing it in my face when it's a little out of my price range...

Clint, Thanks for the quick reply to my e-mail on the PRO-940HD. I'll definately look for that disc you mentioned and check with the cable company for test patterns after the HD box arrives.

A quick note to others, I am a newbie in the HDTV world. I made numerous trips to different retailers to compare brands and models and read alot of online reviews prior to my purchase. I was not even considering this unit originally. The day I went to the retailer to purchase the unit I decided upon, I had my original choice side by side with the PRO-940HD. The Pioneer just blew the competition away. I just purchased the PRO-940HD, at the store it was worth the extra $$, it arrives tomorrow.

I was originally going to purchase the Panasonic TH-42PX600U 42" HDTV Plasma Screen TV.

No doubt you made a better choice, even their regular plasma, 5070 looked better than panasonic and Elite was even cleaner!

Thanks, I've had the unit for 2 days now and I'm extremely pleased with the performance. I had some relatives over today and they couldn't believe they were watching regular cable! The HD cable box comes on Wednesday and hopefully the Blue Jeans Cables.
