Pioneer displayed their new Elite BDP-09FD flagship Blu-ray player at CEDIA 2009 claiming it has become the world's first Blu-ray Disc Player to achieve THX certification. But, the lack of DVD-A and SACD support is a bit unsettling considering that Pioneer is positioning this player as their reference to appeal to audiophiles and videophiles alike. Despite its shortcomings, the BDP-09FD is quite a sturdy built player weighing in at 30lbs. It has the look and feel of a high end product you'd expect from Pioneer Elite. The MSRP is $2,200.

You don't get it?? I have a hard time shelling out $600 for an Oppo universal player. Who the heck buys these overpriced things?

That's unreal considering they spent 1hr on the phone with me and another hr on the phone with THX discussing this as a new product and how all their elite stuff is now THX certified. Pioneer is a strange company in terms of getting the message out. They barely work with online magazines and act like its a favor for anyone to review their stuff since they give you only 2 weeks to work with it. Sorry for the old news.

They did tell me the SC27 receiver is a step up in performance from the SC-07 we reviewed last year and that my review was a direct result of them beefing the amp section up a bit. I will put some info up shortly on that.

Who needs a 30lb BD player? If everything is done in the digital domain, does it matter?

Yeah, the SC-25 and SC-27 are definitely new, but I really wonder if the amps are improved. They spec out similarly to the SC-05 and SC-07.

Gene, you can even check the firmware update page of this thing:

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/HomeEntertainment/Blu-rayDisc+DVD/EliteBlu-rayDiscPlayers/ci.BDP-09FD.Kuro?tab=F

The last update they did was back in April to enable DTS-HD MA decoding.

Prob not if you're using the HDMI output.

I wish we'd make up our minds..............if the hi rez formats are dead, then how can we dis a mfgr. for not including the formats in their players? I tried selling my dvda sacd collection and couldn't even get a nibble............
I've owned a fair amount of Elite gear and it was always quality and dependable.
Still, my Samsung BD2550 streaming netflix and pandora is doing just fine thank you very much.............that collection is still available, too..............

HI David....if you're still interested in selling your SACD/DVD-A collection, please post here, or PM me. I might be interested, depending on the titles you have.

Thanks!
