I've heard from several sources in the last couple weeks that Pioneer's entire plasma line will be 1080p for the fall release. Is this true? Is this old news (pardon me if it is!)

The only thing I can tell you is, I've seen another big price drop in existing panels (minus the FDH1) in the last 2 weeks...to the tune of over $700! So maybe something is happening. ( Canadian prices)

If this does happen, would one be wise to snatch up an existing 1080i/720p Elite "old panel" whilst they still exist?

While there is no reason not to buy a pioneer at the currently excellent prices they have (Elites are almost the same price as the Pure level), it isn't a real "fire-sale". Panasonic and other highly touted brands can be had for less.

While the future model Pioneers will include a number of 1080p versions, it is unlikely that any of the "pure" models will be 1080p. Firstly, due to the fact that 42" and below will probably not offer 1080p (due to pixle size constraints) and secondly there would be little in the way of differentation to allow the Elite version to command a higher price.

If you intend on buying Pioneer and this is the time... go for it. Otherwise, there is not anything "special" about purchasing at this time.

The top end Elite is unfortunetly out of financial reach...however, I'm not sure when to jump in. I know I want to go 50"...I guess the "normal" Elite panel would be good for years to come no?

Yeah - like 10 or 20 years. Really, this generation of HD is pheonemenal no matter how you look at it. Perhaps you can get a bit more resoultion, but to really appreciate 1080p on a 50" panel you have to be about 7 feet from the display... and be critical of it! I sit about 12 feet from my 50" piece of junk Sampo plasma. Hey, it was a great deal at $3,000... about 3 years ago. My how prices have fallen.

Anyway, as much as I want to replace my display, I don't really want to up the 1365x768 resolution. I just want more accurate color and better contrast and processing. A few more inches in size wouldn't hurt either.

So, if a person is buying and is concerned about 1080p vs. 768p displays they really shouldn't be. At the sizes most people are talking about it simply doesn't offer them any true benefit to up the resolution.

On the other hand - my 106" screen with front projector... it's time to upgrade that bad boy!

It's a good time to get a Pioneer Elite television set! With the price drop, there really are no excuses now. While 1080P is cool, there really is not too much of a difference with all the sources that are available now. You have to be sitting very close and VERY critical of the picture to tell the difference. Maybe for a front projector with a 100+ inch screen, but for a 50 inch ... not a big deal.

As far as Pioneer Elite vs other manufacturers, the Pioneer Elite is soooooo much better than most other TVs out especially the Panasonic, Samsung, and Hitachi. While these other brands are good in there own right, the Pioneer ELite displays a far more pleasing image with more features, better blacks, vivid color, and better processing when watching non-HD sources. Feel free to look at other brand TVs, but if you want a QUALITY picture, go for Pioneer Elite, you will NOT be dissapointed :D !

The top-of-the-line 50" Pioneer Elite 1080p plasma ($8000) is a darn sweet set. I can sit in front of that thing all day in pure awe of its picture quality. I truly have never seen any other kind of set that can compete. The previous generation Elite sets were nice too, but I can certainly tell the difference between the two.

The prices are certainly coming down. The local BB is now giving away a free 50" Elite (previous generation) with the new 1080p Elite. So you get two 50" Elite plasmas for the price of one ($8000). This was a tempting offer for me, had I not bought a new LCD 4 months ago. Of course, the wife didn't think it was such a great way to spend $8000

New Pannnies!

I was all set on buying a Pioneer FHD-1 which can be bought online for around $5k and locally for around $6k. But then I hear that Panansonic is launching a new "750" line in june. Their new 1080p 50 inch with integrated tuners will have an msrp of $3500.00!! The 58 inch msrp will be set at around $5000.00. The street prices will no doubt be lower than the msrp after a month or so.

I think I'm going to wait till june and grab either the 50 or 58". Oh yeah the 750 series is supposed to have incredible color matching, better blacks and will allow the user to calibrate the set.
