I am looking for a new dvd player and these two both play sacd and dvda. The question is why is the 563 more expensive (and supposedly better)than the newer 578? according to the pioneer site the only difference is that the 578 has a better video decoder. Any opinions on these 2 products? Any other suggestions since my current sony dvd player sucks? Has the bass crossover been fixed in the newer 578 cause in the 563 for dvda the crossover was fixed at 200hz? Thanks
Derek

The bass crossover is the same. 200 Hz for DVD-A and 120 Hz for sacd.
I have read online, from a guy that's well known and respected for modding the 563a, that the 563a does NOT downconvert the sacd's DSD to PCM before going to analog. The 578 DOES downconvert the signal, which means poorer sound. Again, this is from a guy that mods them, and should know what he's talking about.
Also, there is an obvious layer change in the 563a (about 1 sec.), and I understand there's no notice of layer change in the 578. I have read too where there have been strange scrubbing sounds coming from some 578's.

I own the 578 and I'm happy with it.
What Pioneer says should be considered.
I think this should be examined at the schematic level for both units.
I am assuming that if the 563 does not down convert, it will have a processor for DSD and one for DVD A.
I could be mistaken?
I wish one of the engineers who frequent this site would look into this ;) ?

I contacted the Pioneer Customer Support two days ago with the following question:
Inquiry Type:Feature and Specification
lstPublishers:0001
lstTitles:E00001
Inquiry:Hi, I have a DV-578A DVD player and have a question.
I have read at some online forums that the DV-563A player is a true DSD machine and does not downconvert the DSD signal but that the DV-578A downconverts DSD. Is this true?
Their response was:
They both have direct DSD no downconvertion. :)

DV-578 does not have DSD chip on board. All D/A conversions (video and audio) are inside the only one chip - MT 1389. Look for yourself. Here is what I found inside my DV-575 (euro version of the DV-578).

I wish one of you fine Audioholics would supply a picture of the 563A with the cover removed to see if it has two processors or one also?
Please! :)

Change log

I just move from 563 to 578 two weeks ago.

This is my change log:

1 - I can't notice any degradation of sound on DVD-A neither on SACD
2 - The 578 can play DiVx :)
3 - The new one doesn't have volume control on the 5.1 analog outs
4 - Poor MP3 GUI on the 578
5 - With 578 you can mix jpeg, mp3, mpg, avi and vob files on the same disc (DVD or CD)
5 - 578 if faster than 563 to load all kinds of media
6 - The 578 can play WMA, 563 don't
7 - I think that 563 had more bass, and the 578 sound is more clean on DVD-A
8 - 578 has a far superior video processor - 12bits/108Mhz (10/54 on 563)
9 - No pause between layers on 578

I think that 578 is a totally new player that only shares the same front panel layout from the others Pionner DVDs. All conectors in the back panel are in different positions. :)

Here's some other comparisons attached.
Please draw your own conclusions.
I can't find any solid proof that the 563A is better than the 578A
