Pioneer 56-txi complaint

Just traded in my old gear for the new Pioneer 56-txi receiver & Pioneer 59-avi player, but didn't know that the receiver is considered a 'budget' unit since it can't drive 4 Ohm speakers! My Legacy fronts are fine since they are 6-Ohm but I can't get any sound from my old M&K 100B's. What should I do? Trade in the Pioneer for another brand? And, which one? Arcam? That doesn't have the I-link. Get new surround speakers?

Don't sweat it

I wouldn't worry about the 4 ohm vs. 8 ohm thing. Do a search on this forum, and you'll find hundreds of posts on just this topic.

If you've got your rear surrounds hooked up and no sound is coming out, it has nothing to do with the speakers' ohm rating. Something else is wrong. Recheck your connections. Did you try it with a test tone to your surrounds? If nothing else checks out, you may have a faulty receiver.

As crashguy said I woudn't worry too much about the 4 ohm rating. There's really no such thing as a constant 8 ohm or 4 ohm speaker anyway. The resistance level varies as a function of frequency. For example, your "4 ohm" speaker may at certain frequencies be presenting a 16 ohm resistance and at other frequencies 2 or 3 ohms. The 56Txi is generally considered to have a strong amp section for a receiver. If the sound quality is OK and your receiver isn't going into protect mode, don't worry about it especially since your "4 ohm" speakers are surrounds. Compared to your front mains and center, very little content goes to your surrounds.

56-txi cable switching

Thanks for the help, Harmon...well, i tried swapping them out to the back surrounds - then, swapped them as front speakers(they sound fine there!) I guess it is an internal amp problem. At least 2 channels aren't putting out anything....now I've got to pack it up and all that hassle.
by the way, I have 2 good power cords(JPS digital Lab & Harmonic Tech AC-11) but they don't fit these things(pioneer 56-txi & 59-avi). Is it worth it to go and get 2 adaptors(I saw the ICECUBE adaptor advertised in AMusicdirect.com) or would it make a difference. It's been so long since I owned a receiver-never had to worry about the cable issue back then!
