Pioneer 1015TX vs. Onkyo SR603X

Greetings All,

I am a rookie who is about to purchase my first HT system.
I've narrowed my choice of Receivers to: 1015TX or Onkyo SR603X.
Both are comparable in price. I am not interested in THX or Zone2. These receivers will be paired to Polk Audio 50's, 60's or 70's.

I am seeking a System that will play music as well as provide surround sound for watching movies
Based on this, which receeiver would you choose.

Thanks in advance,

John

I also have the 1015 and I am extremely happy with it. It is definitely more than an entry level receiver. I have it hooked up to Polk R30 fronts, CS2 center, R15 surrounds, and a SVS PB10 sub. The speakers aren't top of the line by any means, but for an entry level/value speaker set up they sound great (however, I would put the SVS PB10 well above entry level, IMO). I have been thinking about upgrading my fronts to Monitor 60s or 70s. With the SVS sub, I will probably go with 60s because the sub provides more than enough bass for my needs. Just waiting to find a killer deal on some 60s. I have read that it's best to stay away from the Monitor 50s (not sure exactly why).

Was there any specific reason why you chose the Pioneer over the Onkyo?
I was planning on buying the Onkyo 603 and I wondered if there is anything that stood out on one or the other, or was it just more personal preference on your part.

The one thing the Pioneer has that the Onkyo does not is pre-outs.
Those may come in handy in the future for using a separate amp to drive those Polks.
That aside I still feel the sound quality, power, and user friendliness of Onkyo is tough to beat.

But the pre-outs, or lack there of, may become an issue.

Can I confuse the issue with another candidate? Take a look at the Yamaha RX-V657.

The above is a link fo rthe Onkyo 702. It is last years model but it is still a step up from the 603. It does have pre outs and is what I would consider a great deal at $349 plus shipping. This item is a refurb on UBID and comes with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

Just my 2 cents.

Onkyo 603X

I think either receiver would be great. If you are interested on the Onkyo go to

accessories4less.com.

They are an authorized Onkyo-Marantz dealer and have the 603x for $ 329.0. The 703's are $ 449.00. I have brought items from them since 2000 and have not had one issues. I am lucky though because I live in orlando and I can just go to their location and pick up the items.

I just brought the 603X and an Onkyo 6 disc dvd player to replace a Pioneer Elite 24TX that died after 5 years and a Pioneer Elite DVD changer C-36 that died two weeks after the receiver...also 5 years old. I'm having an issue with Pioneer's quality right now after speanding $ 1600.00 5 years ago on both items. (Pioneer Elite was brought at Sound Advice now Tweeters.

I had brought Acoustic Research 312HO speakers from accessories4less in 2000 and still have them as my Flagship speakers in my home system.

The service is impeccable. I can't say enough good things about them.

Onkyo for me

All comes down to sound. I have had a couple of Pioneer Receivers but in truth was never that happy with the sound. I now run an Onkyo 603 and I am more than happy with it.

I'm trying to figure out why the last two posts revived a thread that ended back in January? I'm sure the original poster found a unit by now.

FWIW, you would need to step up to the Onkyo 703 to begin to compare to the Pioneer 1015.
