Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon - Wow!

Folks,
This may sound strange to some of you, but I have not really ever heard anything by Pink Floyd except for that one song from "The Wall" called "Another Brick in the Wall (part 2)". It was popular with a lot of my friends in High School, but I was more of a glam rock kid, Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue, etc.

Anyway, I keep seeing DSOTM praised on this site as the very best SACD out there, at least that is what it seems like. So when I was in the mall today, I found it for $12 and I thought, what the heck? Why not? If so many other people like it, why don't I try it out? So I did. I brought it home and listened to it, and even my wife liked most of it. :D

In fact, tonight, my little 1 yr old son was restless and wasn't going to sleep, so I wrapped him up, and went out and held him as we listened to the last 3 tracks. Interestingly it calmed him down, and when I put him back in bed, he went right to sleep. I like the mellow sound of most of it, and it picks up in some interesting ways in other parts. I haven't heard it in mc surround yet, but it sounds great on the 2 channel tracks. I tested the difference in sound between the cd layer and the 2 channel layer, and there really is a difference. The 2 channel sacd layer was more open, and warm sounding. The cd layer still sounded good, but there was just something missing, not sure what though.

I am glad that I got it. Now I know why so many people like it. One of my favorite tracks so far is "Us and Them". "Time" is neat too. Again, thanks to all of you who without knowing it have turned me on to some neat new music. Oh, I also listened to a few clips from "The Delicate Sound of Thunder" by Pink Floyd. That sounds neat too. I am going to be looking into that soon and see if it is worth getting. Do you guys like that album? Would you recommend it?

Right now, I am listening to my mp3's (I'm on my computer) of Peter Gabriel from the 16 Golden Greats album. I would like to get this on SACD, it has so many neat songs on it. I know it's a single layer, so it's not a hybrid... Is it in 2 channel only or surround? Either way, I think I would like it just fine.

If you like Pink Floyd(and it seems you have found that you do), Delicate Sound is a worthy addition. I was captivated by DSOTM when it first came out on my lowly portable tape player...the music and theme through the entire album has kept me listening to it for these last 30+ years. I am anxiously waiting for Pulse to arrive at my doorstep anyday now.

Agreed, DSotM is stellar. Just you wait till you hear the surround version!

I haven't heard the SACD of Peter's Shaking the Tree: Sixteen Golden Greats, but I remember reading somewhere that the 2-channel SACD mix isn't that impressive (that's all there is, by the way -- just the 2-channel SACD, no CD layer, no surround). You might enjoy his Play DVD which has something like 24 songs on there, all in stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS 96/24 5.1. I haven't listened to the stereo mixes, but the DTS tracks are amazing. Very nice use of the surround format, and incredible sound, not to mention all those great songs. Peter's latest album, Up, is also a fantastic SACD experience. It's got the CD layer, 2-channel SACD and surround mix as well. And it's phenomenal. Peter's one of those artists who's really embraced the concept of surround music. He does it very well, it's involving and enveloping. Highly recommended.

cheers,

The next logical step is to pick up Wish You Were Here. I personally like that better than DSoTM.

If you want a sampling of their older stuff, you can usually find 'Works' in the bargain bin for a few bucks. It's sort of a greatest hits of their early work before they achieved commercial success. Even the radio stations here occasionally play 'Set Your Controls For the Heart of the Sun' which is a long dreamy sounding song similar to Shine On You Crazy Diamond (which I assume is what helped your son to fall asleep - not because its boring but because it is relaxing).

I forgot to mention that I have the sacd of Shaking The Tree.....not impressed with it. Seems very "bright" at moderate to high volume and is lacking in any appreciable lfe. No wonder I don't listen to it much....

Leprkon,

Wow, Freaky. It's amazing how so many people actually believe stuff like that. Owell, you look for patterns, and you see/hear what you want.

Something funny about that, in High School, I had a computer music class, where we composed music on the computer, and used synthesizers, mixers, keyboards, etc. One of the metalheads in the class thought it would be fun to put in some subliminal messages, so using the mixer, he recorded some phrases and dubbed them in backwards into the song we put together. He said "Eat your vegetables, drink your milk, listen to your mother, do your homework." Stuff like that, it was hilarious. It actually turned out pretty good.

In fact that was when I was introduced to Rush for the first time. Somebody had "Spirit of the Radio" on sheet music, so we put it into the computer, and output it using the synthesizers, and orchestrated it really well. It wasn't until later I heard the actual song by the band. Turns out our version wasn't too far off. I went out and bought Rush's Permanent Waves cd not long after that. Also found that I really liked Roll the Bones and Moving Pictures, though I don't own them yet. It would be neat if they would come out with an SACD or DVD-A. Does anyone know if that is planned at any time soon?

Speaking of Hi-Rez stuff, I already emailed Def Leppard, and they have no plans to release anything on hi-rez soon. Too bad, Hysteria was a fun album. That was the first REAL rock album I ever bought. Before that I think it was the Chipmunk's Munk Rock." That was actually a lot of fun!

That would be neat. Speaking of Vinyl, I should ask my dad if I can have his old LP copy of the Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed". I don't know if he ever listened it. At least not when i was younger.

In any case, thanks guys, you are opening up a neat, new, and unexplored world of music. It is appreciated.

VH1 Classic hosted a one hour show of "Pulse". Wow it was great. Going out to buy the DVD tomorrow.
Been a long long time since I listened to Pink Floyd.

I would agree with those who mentioned earlier about 'Wish You Were Here' being the next logical album to explore. For various reasons, start to finish, it may be my favorite PF release. They're supposed to be woking on a surround mix of the album which is said to be due out toward the end of this year, last I heard.

I've tried that Dark Side of the Rainbow many times. Let me just say, someone was smoking a little too much you-know-what... YES, there are some interesting coincidences, but that is all they are. The band has officially already stated that there was no way for them to put the two together at the time they recorded the album.

that works even better with the first Matrix movie.

As for the surround mix, call me crazy, but once I got past the "oh neat" factor of multi-channel music I just went back to stereo.
