Pick a book and a Director

If you could pick one book and one director to be paired together to make a film version of the title, which would they be?

I'll start it off...

My book would be Ringworld, and of course I would pick Peter Jackson at the helm. However, one of my constraints is that the movie would have to be at least 3 hours long, with an intermission.

I know I know, no chain would carry a 3+ hour movie with an intermission, but this is Fantasy! :)

Hmmm,....sorry, can't do just one :)

Armageddon 2419 A.D. - Ridley Scott wishful thinking Howard Hawks
Starship Troopers - James Cameron wishful thinking John Ford
and I hear Wolfgang Petersen already has my third choice - Enders Game

Caveat: gotta stick to the original story.

No, no, no! If it was to be something by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, it'd have to be The Death Gate Cycle, Rose of the Prophet trilogy or the Star of the Guardians trilogy. :)

I tried to read Death Gate- I got about 100 pages into the first book and threw it away. Just god awful stuff. "Hugh the Hand"? Blech!

Aw man! Are you serious? I loved that set of seven books. You should've stuck with it a bit more; it just gets better and better...:)

My brother keeps claiming that, too. Unfortunately they start so badly I doubt I'll ever manage to gut it out long enough to find out.

I made it about half-way through the first book several years ago and didn't care for it. Picked it up again about a year later to try again. Still didn't care for it, and sold it to half-price books.

For movies...I'm thinking David Weber's "On Basilisk Station" - with maybe Bryan Singer?

I think I read one of 'em, I can't recall. I read one set after the War of the Lance, with the kids of the original companions. Plus the Twins Trilogy, all the Knack ones about Kaz, plus a bunch more DL books. One of my favorite "franchises" if you will.

This may be cheating, but I'd like to see a Peter Jackson direct a 3 part x 4 hour each epic adaption of the videogame Knights of the Old Republic. With Kate Beckinsale as Bastilla.:)

Just keep Lucas away from it!

Wow, this thread is just too good to give one answer.

How about "Dragonsong" (Or any of the Dragonriders of Pern series) by Anne McCaffrey with Alex Proyas directing. The guy can handle subtlety (Dark City) and also does big Hollywood too (I, Robot); his surround mixes are awesome as well.

On the subject of Asimov, any of the Robot novels would be killer ("Caves of Steel", "The Naked Sun", "The Robots of Dawn"), these works are still surprisingly relevant and I would like to see Michael Douglas as Elijah Bailey and a 1/2 actor 1/2 CG to do R.Daneel -- who better than Peter Jackson to do this.

Lastly, how about something groundbreaking like "Banish your Belly" by Kenton Robinson starring Christie Brinkley, directed by Paul Verhoeven with lots of gratuitous crotch shots, explosive hernias, and a studio mandated voice over narrative a la Blade Runner.

Very interesting thread. I can go with about 90% of the suggestions so far. Who would have thought so many Sci-Fi/Fantasy book fans were here? Some of my old favorites have already been mentioned (DL, Stainless Steel Rat, Pern, etc).

Of course my biggest wish already happened (LotR/Jackson)--I only waited 20 years for that to come together.

I'd love to see Magician, Silverthorn and A darkness at Sethanon by Raymond E Feist made. For me, they are on a par with Lord of the rings. The latter may describe a more vivid image of the world described within, but Magician etc are epic fantasy.

As an aside, I actually had to persevere to make it through the DragonLance trilogy. :(

As for director, I'm sure Peter Jackson would do a fine job.
