Can someone explain this phenonom?

I am watching low def from my cable box (through my Yamaha receiver) via componet video. I turn off the monitor, turn it on and the picture is in 1080i mode (as confirmed by my monitor when I press the "Info" button on the remote). If I channel up / down one channel, the same program is now low def.
What is happening??

Some Tv stations send out digital cable service, usually local stations in 720/1080 format and SD format. In my area these HD stations are decimal stations of the same low def stations. So, when you go up or down, you most likely are into low def. But, that hi def station should come back when you tune through the channels.
