I'm considering adding a turntable to my system and think I've decided on the Pro-ject Carbon. Does anyone have a recommended preamp for this unit? I'm using an Anthem MRX-700 as my receiver, and don't know much about preamps, so any advice is appreciated.

You could spend big bucks on one or drop 50.00 on a belari vp 29 on amazon. I don't think I could tell the difference.. Surprised a 2k $ receiver doesn't a mm pre built in.

Assuming the cartridge is moving magnet, most of them work fine. I have a Cambridge Audio phono stage that wasn't too expensive. If the cartridge is moving coil, you'll want to make sure the PS supports that.

There are differences with how well various phono stages track the RIAA curve and slight differences in noise floor and channel separation. Those differences would be mostly hard to hear so you don't have to spend a lot.
