Phono PreAmp + Bose Cinemate?

First time post so thanks for having me :)

I finally got my TT (Pioneer PL 518) back from the local repair shop after what seemed an eternity. Setting it up in my new place was going to be tricky, as I had gotten rid of almost all of my older hi-end A/V equipment in the move. No more receiver!

I've been shopping around for a slim-design receiver, I like the Marantz NR1501, but I'm not thrilled with shelling out a bunch of money just to listen to records again. To make things even more interesting (challenging?), I am currently running TV/Video sound through a Bose Cinemate 2.1 system.

Solution? I found a Cambridge Audio 640p phono preamp on Amazon for under $179. Run that straight to the Bose via RCA and I thought it'd be gravy. Well, it's not gravy. And if it is, it's lumpy gravy.

I set it up yesterday and everything appears to working fine. The sound, though, is muffled, bass-heavy, almost devoid of any high end. What gives? I called the repair shop and asked if they had bench tested for sound and he said they played records for two days! Everything sounded fine to him, so it's not the stylus.

My next step will be to borrow a trad. receiver to see if that will produce the right sound with/without the preamp. Until then, though, any input would be much appreciated!

You can guarantee the problem can be traced right the door of Dr Amar Bose. Nothing good comes from his quarter. I would bet his proprietary digital processing circuitry is the answer.

Get rid of anything Bose and you won't look back.

Get some conventional electronics and some proper speakers. You won't look back.
