phono help

I changed out my receiver from a Denon to a Yamaha RX-A780. I have a turntable hooked up to it. Worked fine on the denon and with the yamaha sound is really distorted when I play vinyl. I double checked the hook ups this morning to make sure it was correct and even put in a new stylus. No better. Timing on the turntable is set correctly etc...

I am thinking it is the setting in the yamaha about what type sound is set up to come out of the turntable?

Are you using a phono preamp or just direct?

Audio technica AT-LP120-USB turntable. Has a preamp built in

this made it click for me. Yamaha has a preamp built in. I plugged the turntable into a different infput and it works fine. tanks for your help,. Brian
