I had heard of this during Oscar season, but ever since seeing the trailer I wanted this one. It is a black and white, traditional hand animated film based on actual events of a girl's journey through life in Iran during the many years of conflict and war there. It is quite powerful and very well done. It is a very personal story, slow at times, but quite well done and paying exceptional attention to details, both in story and presentation. The trailer makes it seem a little light, but it isn't, it is more of a slice of "real" life IMO. Themes are adult in nature - making the transition from child to adult, decisions in life and how they play out, and living in a country torn by war. I found it compelling and very well done. The main asset fo the film IMO, is that they seemed to convey the main character's actual personality extremely well - her essence is felt throughout as she consulted on all aspects of the flim (there is an interesting documentary included). I expected subtitles, but was surprised to find a Dolby TrueHD English track. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated film. Well worth a rent. 4 of 5 for me.
