perfect kappa 12 design

I am looking at changing my HT.
I currently have a ported perfect kappa 12 and was thinking of having a pair of sealed subs instead (using them for speaker stands).
It looks as though the perfect kappa speaker is not readily available anymore?

Is there another driver that might work better in sealed small enclosure?

I would take a look at the Exodus Audio Shiva-X2 as a quality replacement.

One can also use this driver in a passive radiator kit which will be a nice option giving you near the same performance as the vented kappa in a smaller enclosure.

I would also look at the JL Audio 10W7 for a sealed enclosure application as you describe, as it will have similar output capabilities to most 15" subs. It also will allow for some additional eq added to further lower extension due to extremely low power compression and conservative excursion ratings.

This is what I have today.
[/IMG]

The room size is 12.5' wide x 23' long x 8' high.

I have the DCX 2496 but never did get the whole dial in part with REQ?

I am about ready to pull the trigger on an Onkyo 808 and looking at Ascend's for mains and center, 170's and or 340's.

I am not sure that I will be able to swing the $800 for the JL drivers along with everything else.

If I go with the 170's as small as they are I could do 4 of the 10" drivers or if I went with 12" was thinking I would have to go with side firing to keep the two mains from looking out of place on top of the subs?

Is Chris still around?

The exodus audio drivers will suit your purpose an cost less than the JL. They also have a greater performance envelope when compared to the Kappa, especially in a sealed configuration considering you already have a DCX2496.

I wonder how the CSS Trio12 compares with the Shiva in terms of distortion/output/extension/box size/compression etc.

I know it's intended to be a budget line compared to their SDX speakers but it seems to be beastly in its own right... Just with less emphasis on "max output" and more on just linearity and sound quality for an affordable price... it's 50 bucks cheaper than a shiva X2. That ends up being 400 for a pair of shivas and 300 for a pair of trio12s :D Our four for 600 vs four for 800! The passive radiator kit comes in at 200... I'm willing to bet a trio12 with three APR passives (which is what the kit is) will definitely compete with a single shiva in output... and the shiva with only two passives is 300 dollars.

I love the exodus drivers mind you, I just thought i'd suggest a speaker that tends to get no love.

As a note the Trio 12 kit comes with 2 passive radiators in the quartet kit. In the APR kit is also comes with dual passives. This also may be a good option to look at. Small performance loss but very little. On the driver itself that is.

You sure? That's not how they seem to word it...

12" driver and passive trio

Get a 12" APR free when you buy this kit which consists of 1 TRIO12 speaker and 2 12" APR passive radiators.
Another one, the Trio12APR15 kit comes with a single 15" passive, for the person who likes the big driver "look"

My head is spinning...

My AV receiver choices have changed. The Onkyo is off the table as neither the 808 or 1008 have 12 volt trigger for zone 1.

A member here as found me, he has a NIB perfect kappa driver that is priced around $200 ish to my door.

My current ported perfect kappa is nice, but without having the ability to make the dcx2496 do it job properly I am at a loss of what to do as far as subs.

I would think that 2 sealed 12" perfect kappas, set up correctly with my crossover should fill my room with enough bass for anyone ??

I can follow directions, but dont know much about drivers & modeling them.

The Exodus Audio Shiva-X2 - What size box would be required for sealed/passive?

The Trio kit, do you have a link?

I do appreciate all of your help.

That is exactly my issue!
I like the way one sounds, but need to clean up the clutter some.
I am hoping that two in sealed boxes will keep me happy? (for now)?

Although you're free to tweak, (it's not difficult at all to learn how to use winISD at the very least, other programs can be a headache though)
Kevin's application notes suggest that

2.5 cu ft is generally nice for a Shiva X2 sealed,

or

4 cu ft tuned to 20hz and an 18hz high pass filter. To get that 20hz tuning you need 13cm diameter and 70cm length.

I have a sealed box for my perfect kappa 12 that has an internal 1.5 cu ft.
When I get the second one, I would imagine that I will make another and have the mains sit on top of the subs.
I know I will have to take the insert out for the sealed box.

I finally chose the Denon 3311ci for my receiver, so I should be able to get moving on the subs soon.

I do appreciate all of your help with my scattered directions.

Look at the Infinity Kappa 120.w9.

What I am not sure of from reading your posts: What are you missing? Are you having issues using the DCX? Not sure how to use it?

I have had the DCX up and operational for almost 2 years, I played with it and adjusted the AV receiver to a point where I feel a little better than straight thru receiver. I need to work on REW and figure out what I am doing on the DCX. When I got the DCX life happened and didnt have the time to dedicate to learning the functions.

If you have the Behringer MIC you can use the auto-align function (input C to Mic) to start some preliminary tweaks (phase/delay etc...).

I tried that when I first got it, no joy.
I do have the RS 33-2055 spl meter and all of the conections for REW.
I will be starting to try that either tonight or first part of next week.
