When I was in high school and college, I used to be somewhat of a soccer (aka futbol) fan. In those days, the entire soccer world was obsessed with the brilliant Brazilian soccer player Pelé. His real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He was so much better than any of his competition that he dominated play where ever he went. He played on Brazilian World Cup winning teams in 1958 (at age 17), 1962, and 1970. No one else has come close to that.
Pelé was agile, skilled, inventive, and very fast. Few could keep up with him. At the 1966 World Cup, successful ways of defending against Brazil involved deliberately injuring him – causing major changes in international soccer rules.
Pelé is known for his bicycle kick. He didn't invent it, but he perfected it. See the photo and the blurry YouTube video. (Ignore the stupid Nazi/swastika references in the video.)
