a friend has a peavey cs-800 stereo amplifier and i was considering buying it but i wasnt too sure if it would work for powering any kind of speakers. it puts out 400 wpc at 4 ohms and my speakers can take 350 a channel at 6 ohms. Will this amp damage my speakers if i try to use it with them? And is there a lower end stereo preamp i could use with it?

No it wont hurt your speakers, in general its better to have more power than your speakers can handle. How much does this friend want for this amp? Peavey makes good band gear but I'm not sure how good that is in the home.

It has XLR inputs, and the fan might be a little annoying, other than that im sure it will sound pretty good.

You can get a preamp cheap on ebay. This is just for 2 ch music, you could get an older Marantz receiver (2230,2240, 2270)for cheap and use it as a tuner preamp. They actually work pretty good.

This is a great deal.

A lot is going to depend on how much you want to spend. What is your budget?

Well check out e-bay, you can find a pretty good no frills preamp for that.
