I have 2 500 GB internal hd's on my computer. 1 is loaded with Windows XP, the other with Vista. I am still reluctant to make the full switch to Vista til the get a few more of the bugs worked out of it. I only have 1 hd plugged in at a time for a simple dual boot setup. What I was wondering is that I'm looking to get a PS3 and I would like to network my computer to it. I don't care for wireless too much and I'll just hard line my router to my PS3 to share the files. Is it worth reformatting the drive with Vista on it for the time being and then upgrading in a year or so, or is Vista going to become (more) useful anytime soon. This, I know, is a very broad question and any opinions or recommendations would greatly be appreciated. Thanks again.

Mike

P.S. The extra hd space would be used to back up my movie collection.

I guess I am really confused by your post.

What problems are you having with Vista and is there an issue with it connecting to a PS3 (I don't have a ps3). Which version of Vista do you have? I use XP, XP 64bit and Vista ultimate and I must say that vista is much faster than XP and I have very few issues. I did build the machine so I speced everything to work with Vista so I do not have any of the driver problems that some have.

Most of the problems I have with Vista is compatability with some of my older programs I use, such as Finale music writing software, that due to the high price tag, updated isn't an option for a bit. There are a few more software issues, but to be honest I haven't ran the Vista drive since Sept. I think I'm waiting for the big service pack that's due in June (I'll believe it when I see it). I run XP Pro and Vista Premium. Since I plan to run my media through my (soon to be) PS3, is it really worth keeping Vista on my system since I won't be utilizing the great media center features it has, at least not anytime soon, or should I reformat that drive and use it for storage space for my collection of DVD's. Sorry for the confusion, after reading back over my post I could have been a little more direct. Thanks for the response(s)

Yup having an expensive piece of software would have kept me from upgrading as well. I would wait and see until after you get the PS3 and see how you want to configure the media setup. I think you can add an external drive to it for storage and then you would not have to use your pc for most of your media needs. Also I hope others that have ps3's can comment on the media features and if they use them with their computers.

cheers.

Kill Vista

If your not using it, why bother? Kill it and just reload it when you are ready to make the switch.

When you do make the switch, you may also consern loading the x64 version, rather than the 32 bit version for capability of addressing more ram... but that's up to you.

I don't have anything against Vista at this point. It's prettier than xp... and for the most part it works fine (aside from some issues with 3rd part support and the new SP1 pack that breaks 3rd part applications)... but whatever, XP is not perfect either. Still, if your using xp every day anyway, why waste a 500gb drive? Use it as you want... and when your ready for vista you can just chuck in a 1TB drive and run vista off of that.

The media server capabilities on the PS3 work the same with XP as with Vista. I have yet to switch the PCs in my house to Vista and PS3 reads my media files just fine on all my XP Pro boxes.
