ok i am going to reinstall vista home premium because somehow I've managed to get the codecs I need to play anything except DVDs. Vista Home Premium comes with a dvd codec. But I've somehow disabled it, and can only view Xvid, Divx, etc. I get the digital copy protection for windows media player. I've tried everything, and read everything suggested. People say reinstall graphics drivers, reinstall wmp11. That doesn't work. I've even tried removing all the codecs I had to see if DVDs would start working again.

So I'm just going to do a reformat. But I want to install some codecs that won't ruin my DVD player, and enable me to play Divx, Xvid, and most other comrpessions.

Any tips are appreciated.

Just google and install either Vista Codec Pack or CCCP and you're good to go.

Wanna-be purists will clamor for "ffdshow tryouts" but alone it won't handle all formats. For your purposes, DVDs, it's fine though, so any of the three I mentioned.

Before you do that though, you should uninstall any existing codecs.
