PB 12 Plus 2 in short supply - time to buy?

All:

I just got of the phone with SVS and discovered that the PB 12 Plus/2 is expected to be sold out in the coming weeks. Here is my delimma - buy this beast now before it sells out (1200 shipped) or perhaps either go with the PB Plus or the HSU VTF 3 HO in a few months (both around 1000). I'd save 200 and could wait to save a little. But those aren't the critical issues - I am only concerned about performance (also aesthetics and size are not critical either).

My room is a basement - 3 cement walls - and enclosed. Its 20X13 by about 8 feet. This will be paired with the paradigm studio series.

I have a very young family, so I am not going to be cranking this, but want something that performs well with primarily music (60% - all types), but also gives good deep base on movies.

I point out the volume factor primarily because the SVS rep noted that I would likely notice the difference between the Plus and the Plus/2 largely at volumes I might not ever play at.

I believe these all to be good subs. I don't want to miss a good deal but I also don't want to buy a sub the benefits of which I might never (or seldom) be able exploit.

Thoughts, thanks!

Hey, they're not going to be babies forever!

Ok, I know that didn't help much. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of those. I do think $1200 shipped for the PB plus/2 is a hell of deal and would probably go with that if I were in your shoes.

A new sub has been promised over at HSU. Supposedly it's footprint isn't much (or any?) larger than the VTF-3, but it's reported to dip to 10 Hz (+/-?). They're being very tight-lipped about it...so tight-lipped I'm not even certain it's a real item. The announcement date has been delayed a couple of times now, but the latest I saw was sometime around the end of June. Here is a quote from Pete Hsu regarding finishes...."it will be available in painted black finish as the standard finish. The new sub will also be available in the following luxury finishes: real wood maple/rosenut/espresso veneer, and piano gloss black".

If you can wait, and if it's the real deal, you just might have a next gen sub on your list. But I dunno.............:(

thanks

Bandphan - thanks for the note on the 15s - I had not considered them and so I checked out the thread - there were a lot of raves and that appears to be a great set up - but can you tell me what a "109 pointer" is? It was mentioned in the thread -

Also, the HSU option on the new sub - if release is end of June are there any educated guessed re: pricing?

It sounds like I can wait this out a little but and I should be considering some other options.

I owned a Hsu Research VTF-3 HO Turbo for about 7 months before changing to a SVS PB13-Ultra. The Hsu VTF-3 HO Turbo is a VERY musical sub. It also goes very low, and has tremendous output.

Its a worthy contender in the 1k sub range. It looks funny, but performs like a real champ. I think for music it sounds better than my Ultra. And I pushed mine pretty hard a few times and NEVER bottomed out the driver. The Ultra has more output, but I really do think the Hsu beats the Ultra for music.

Just .02 cents from an previous owner.

I'm not trying to suggest to you to buy now or wait but there will always be something "bigger and better" coming out.;)

GimpyRic - I assume you probably tried the 3 HO without the turbo - did you notice much of a difference? I agree -the turbo looks fairly goofy.

And Matt34 - how true - I have been in the market for a serious sub for sometime now, but its always at that point where you are ready to jump where you have the most questions -

Without the Turbo, the VTF-3 HO Has serious output, but doesn't go as low.

why not consider 2 mfw15s 1k:eek:
I'd rather pay extra for a SVS than wait 4-5 months after ordering a MFW15. I think there were some people on AVS who have been waiting months.

Ric, it's all very subjective, but I'm wondering if you've got the Ultra dial. What's your FR like? Not trying to make a case for SVS here, everybody should decide for themselves what they prefer. I'm just curious, because the musicality of the U13 is one of their reported acheivements.

I've had to re-think my last statement about the Ultra and music. I've since cranked up my system some and don't think I was fair to my Ultra. The SVS PB13-Ultra IS an AWESOME SUBWOOFER. And the output is without question. I can crank the heck out of my Emotiva amp, and the Ultra is like "is that all you got"?

To late to edit that first post, but the VTF-3 HO is a very musical sub, although not nearly as powerful as the Ultra. And the Ultra too is a musical sub, I just haven't been paying attention lately.

Why is the SVS Plus/2 so far down the list? For music it nearly took last place! ...Not really what I expected from a >$1k SVS Sub. Does anyone know if the Plus/2 tested by craigsub had the upgraded 12.3 drivers?
Thanks,
Craig
pm craig on the drivers:rolleyes: remember this was a panel test list under the same conditions, your in room responses will be different. the svs p/2 is a great sub, just seems to be better values out there now. Ive stated before that im not a fan of HSU looks, some dont care, were all different with different needs. Im waiting to see the new seaton/craig sub (scamp) in july, at the price... im sooooo curious.
