I have the rxv 667. I am wondering if when I am listening to music on dish network if I can turn the tv off n just listen to audio. Currently when I turn the tv off it turns off the audio bcause of hdmi. I enabled the pass through n still nothing. I know a few months ago I was somehow able to turn the tv off n listen to audio but can't remember how it happened.

Hi. First, I want to make sure that we know how you have things connected so that we know how the audio is being routed from the Dish receiver:
  • Do you have the Dish receiver connected directly to your Yamaha with HDMI?
  • Do you have the Dish receiver connected to your TV in any way?
  • Are you playing audio through the receiver when the TV is on?

If you are routing audio directly from the Dish receiver to your Yamaha, playing the audio through your receiver, and have the Yamaha connected to your TV for video only - try turning off the "HDMI Control" feature on the Yamaha if it's on (page 102 of your owner's manual) to see if that fixes your issue.

Then you must have HDMI audio out set to on and getting the audio back from your TV to receiver.

You need to set HDMI audio out to off. You will then hear the audio via the speakers connected to your receiver, but won't be able to hear audio from the TV speakers.

I will try what tls said. As far as the other questions, Dish goes to receiver. Everything is simply running to receiver via hdmi then hdmi monitor out to tv.

I have been thinking about this. You say you have no return from your TV to receiver.

My guess is that DISH network has changed something, so that unless the receiver has an on TV it mutes the audio for DRM reasons.

Your best bet, if this still happens with HDMI audio out set to off is to use a SPDIF out (coax or Toslink), or an analog out from your DISH unit and use a different non HDMI input on your receiver for music.

If you haven't already, try switching to another input source and then back to the Dish receiver after you've turned the TV off.

In my system, my components are connected to my Pioneer receiver by HDMI, then I have an HDMI cable running to the TV for video (just like you've described is how you have it for Dish). When I switch HDMI inputs on the receiver, or if I switch to the HDMI input on the TV, there is a short pause as (I think) the HDMI handshake is worked out in which there is no audio or video. Perhaps your Yamaha is losing the handshake when you turn off the TV, and it might regain it if you switch away from and back to the Dish input.

Pure Direct mode will turn off Video and just play Audio. Try that. :D

This is strange. I think there is a malfunction.

For some reason the receiver does not know the TV is off, and expecting a hand shake which it is not getting and should not require.

First disconnect the HDMI cable to the TV at the receiver.

If you have no audio, then the receiver's HDMI board is suspect.

If there is no audio, update software. If no luck do a default reset. If no luck after that the receiver needs service.

If you have audio after you unplug the HDMI cable, then change the cable first.

If no luck see if you can connect to another TV. If you have the same problem the receiver needs service. If it works with the other TV your TV needs service.

I got it to work but I have to change the tv to a differ source then turn off the tv. It is kind of a pain since when I turn the tv back on I have to switch the tv source back to hdmi.

Maybe you already mentioned this, but you might also get it to work by turning the receiver off and then back on.

All in all, it's still a pain. If you don't find an easier way, I'd go with Mark's suggestion of hooking up another digital audio connection (if you have that option) from the Dish receiver to the Yamaha and listen to music through that connection. That way, you wouldn't need to fuss with the TV.

I bet that TV is not HDCP certified, and does not tell the receiver it is shutting down.

What is the TV?

I don't see that, that TV is HDCP certified. It does list certifications in those 94 pages of instructions, in the English language.

I strongly suspect that TV is not HDCP certified, which I understand is common in Samsung gear.

I know your receiver is certified, and I would bet your TV is the rogue unit.

Making sure equipment that uses the HDMI/HDCP codes, is HDCP certified is important.

With the continuing rise in complexity of the HDMI interface, it is now more important than ever to avoid non HDCP certified gear.
