Parasound's Z series components offer exceptional performance and versatility and they do all of this with a compact form factor. The line has seen three revisions over the years and they have improved performance and appearance of their mini sized separates. The most familiar of these would be the Zamp and Zpre. They are rack mountable, so they offer an excellent solution for custom installers. They also look nice, making them excellent for stand alone use.

Now they are on to revision number four. Enter the Zcd CD/MP3 player, a sleek slot loading design with a plethora of features you normally don't see on full size single play CD players. The Zcd plays all your favorite red label CDs and even plays host for MP3s via the USB connection found on the back of the CD player. A video output allows connection to a display for MP3 track information and navigation. The Zcd has optical and coaxial digital outputs for those wanting to use the Zcd as a transport. Also tucked on the rear are custom installer options including in/out triggers, IR control, and even an RS-232 control port.

Don't clap yet, it gets better. For those wanting to reduce desktop clutter Parasound has you covered. The Zcd has both fixed and variable outputs. You can connect the variable outputs directly to the Zamp, or other amplifier, for a clean minimalist approach. The Zcd also includes a line input, allowing you to connect one additional source via the 1/8" mini jack located on the rear. The detachable IEC power cord just adds to the high end feel the Zcd exudes.

Sweet little transport. I had one of the small tuners and a zamp for a while. Great products and they both had serious build quality.

As you are doing the first look any clue on MSRP?

Ah, I knew I was missing something.

My best guess is $250-350 when it becomes available. No official MSRP appears to have been released.

Audio Advisor has it at $399. I wonder how it performs as a transport?

The analog volume control could be nice. I had one on an old Sony ES CD from the 1990s and it was a bonus to mainline it in to an amplifier and use without a preamp. I recently had the old Sony feeding right into my new Hypex DIY amp and the sound was stellar, even with 1990's dacs.
