hey all, I have a panny dmp-bd30 blu ray player I bought it about 2.5 years ago and never updated any of the firmware,my question is should I do any software upgrades? and if so what would I gain by doing so as I have never had any problems with it. thanks everyone.

Why are you posting this in the amplifier/prepro/receiver forum?

If everything works dandy, then you don't need to update FW. It's still probably a good idea to do so.

Here is the N America FW page for that player, and note that most of them deal with "playability and stability". However, IIRC, this player at its introduction had a -5db cut in the LFE which they quickly fixed. Since you've never updated, I think for that reason alone it is a good idea.

You will note the directions in checking the FW on your player as well.

True, you should post that question in the blu-ray players section.
With that said, YES, you should always update the firmware of your player (BD30), as it will play all the latest blu-ray disc releases, plus it will improve it's performance by being quicker and navigate better the menus.

P.S. Did you try the blu-ray disc of "Drag Me To Hell"?
My Panny BD55 won't even play it (guess I need a firmware update).

jjclecky - Nice BD I have the same one and it does a great job. I have have done some of the firmware upgrades, but not all ...pretty much a pain to upgrade and it plays perfect  so I tend to let a sleeping dog lie.

As far as speed ..it is slow... also have a PS3 ( brute force CPU power, one of tyhe fastest if not the fastest BD player). Nothing is fast anymore... my only disappointment with OS development... my 48K Atari would reboot in micro-seconds and it got me an A+ doing linear programming in my MBA Business Policy class.

... I have never had any problems either ;)
