Panasonic TH-42PZ700U pedestal

Hi,

I just purchased the Panasonic TH-42PZ700U plasma. I went back and forth about wall mounting but tried to save money by purchasing a nice stand to hold the TV and components rather than purchasing the mount in addition to a piece of furniture to house components. I just opened the Panasonic today and the manual starts right out describing how to keep the TV from falling over! I did quite alot of research and didn't encounter this issue anywhere. Am I naive to think that it wouldn't come with a pedestal if it was incapable of holding it up? Straps and screws are provided with which to secure the pedestal to the TV stand and to the wall. The stand I have is mostly glass and metal. So, that won't work. However, I can secure the top part of the TV to the wall if necessary. Parts are provided for both. The manual says to secure both the pedestal to a stand underneath and the back of the TV to the wall. Can anyone who owns this or a similarly weighted TV (~100 lbs.) tell me if I should be as scared as the manual is making me feel? Are the 42" plasmas falling over often? Should I try to bolt the TV to everything in site, or is it included in the manual as more of a liability thing? (It's just my husband and I and a couple of geriatric cats in the house, no small children.) I'm also wondering if I should return it and get an LCD, which would be lighter. I ordered it online and the shipping may be pretty expensive though.

Thanks for any feedback/opinions/suggestions/experiences,
Diane

It is mainly a safety concern because of children maybe knocking it over. sad thing is last year in my area 2 little kids had tube style tvs fall on them and well, you know the rest. I just set up the 75u for my parents last night and I did not use the straps.

Panasonic plasma sets are rock solid on their pedestals. The straps are mainly for protection against kids and earthquakes.

If you ordered online, make sure they are using a high quality shipping carrier. There are some companies out there that do not take the best care of plasma and LCD when shipped. Reputable online places should ship with decent carriers though.

As for your situation, don't worry about it. The Panasonics are quite stable on their pedastals. With no kids in the home it would not be a large concern, if a concen at all. If your cats use it as a jungle gym, you may want to condider something. :D Otherwise, I wouldn't worry at all.

Panasonic pedestal thanks

Thanks evan, Hi Ho and annunaki. I feel much better. I'm free and clear in the kid and earthquake departments and the cats are pretty mellow in their old age.

annunaki, thanks for the tip about shipping. The vendor shipped to a local shipper who then called to make sure we were available for drop off. The box also came equipped with a rough handling sensor. I haven't set up the unit yet, but everything looks perfect as far as visual inspection. Thanks again :)
