Panasonic Ships New G9 Plasma Panels

Panasonic is now readying it latest G9 panels for deployment in the US. The new G9 panel represents the latest iteration of plasma technology and represents what, at first glance, appears to be a leap forward in technology. Using an improved black filter and a further optimization of the gas structure arrangement the new G9 panel supplies 3,072 shades of gray tones and over 29 billion colors (that's 11.5 bit video processing). The black filter serves to deflect ambient light and allow for a more true-black experience, even during daytime viewing.

Is this the new PX600 series? I'm interested in any additional news on this product line as well, including when they will actually be showing up in stores. I understand they are not 1080p displays but they accept 1080p signal through HDMI input. For relative amateurs like me, what does this actually mean to the picture quality of different types of signals?

It means that they're HD compatible @ 1080p, not HD ready. Meaning that they'll accept the signal but it will still be displayed in 720p or 1080i, whatever you fancy.

The article only gives info on the US release. Anything on the European release?

Cheers

Panny Pricing

I've been following one of the AVS threads about the new Panasonic Plasmas. At one point I copied down some of the pricing info on the new TV's. (see attached) I'm still waiting for a further price drop, or for one of the new ones to show up at Costco....

Plasma and electricity rates...

I really view Panasonic as the leader in plasma displays -- especially with the cost effective monitor-only models that are part of their commercial product lines.

They were the top of my "next purchase" list until recently.

What's probably changed it for me is the recent (and, most likely, ongoing) increases in electricity rates here in California. With their current 50" monitor sucking down 440 watts, over the life the monitor we are already looking at paying as much for electricity as the unit itself. (Top tier electric rates in California are already over $0.30 per kwh.)

I'm now looking into alternatives. Sony's LCOS-based products look very interesting.

I noticed that the description of these new models included a claim that they will use less electricity, so it will be interesting to see what the numbers are. However, I suspect, they'll never get plasma all the way down to what a LCOS style displays can do -- less than half the plasma numbers.

Hey EHorst, don't worry about the electricity, we here in British Columbia Canada will sell you guys a whole bunch of it like we did a few years ago, and then you guys can not pay us because you think we are over charging you within world pricing markets. You guys still owe us 100's of millions, but don't worry. Go ahead and stick a Plasma in every room.

Ahum. I just realized they're already available in Europe...sorry about that.

Although they're listed as 720p/1080i, the native resolution is 1024x768 and I thought true 720p was 1280x720? Does this pose any kind of problem?

They accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i input resolutions - that should NEVER be confused with the actual resolution of the display.

The 42" HD display is 1024x768... a very common native resolution and the exact marketing gimmick to 'claim' HD at that size that is often used. I'm not a fan of HD 42" displays since they typically are not 1365x768 or 1280x720 but use rectangular pixels at 1024x768. What crazy scaling do they have to use for that! :)

Still a bit confused

I have been waiting for the arrival of the 50PX600U. I just learned my local store has put in an order for them, so I could pick mine up pretty soon. However, I am still confused about the improvements the PX600 has over the PX60 as it relates to resolution inputs and how this is translated into display resolution and quality. Both the 50 inch PX600 and the PX60 have 1365x768 display resolution. I read Clint's review, which included comments about an improved black filter and a further optimization of the gas structure arrangement, as well as improved contrast and a new digital processing chipset. I understand all of this means an improved picture, but there was also a comment in the review that the PX600 is not expected to be 1080p compatible right off the block.
What does this mean in a practical sense? Does it mean the PX600 a big step forward in display quality from the PX60, but still comes up short of "true HD"? Does it really matter, since there is little true 1080p content out there nor expected any time soon?
I had originally identified the 50PX600 as a great compromise of an excellent picture and terrific value. I just want to make sure that I understand what these improvements really mean since the PX60 is considerably less money. Likewise, it doesn’t appear that spending a little extra will get me that much more than the PX600 has to offer.
By the way, I had originally been looking at NEC and Fujitsu, and this forum got me on track with Panasonic, and I'm very glad I followed everyone's advice to look into Panasonic more closely. I just need a little help as I get toward the final decision.
